We are Panagiotis and Eirini, parents of a 4-year-old boy and an almost 3 year old girl. Our son Stratos, was diagnosed in the autism spectrum when he was only 18 months old. He did not respond to his name and he did not say a word. Furthermore, he had all the symptoms of a child in the autism spectrum. He started following therapies, so as to be able to develop his abilities. Today, he has managed a lot. He obeys some specific rules and he is barely with us; in our world. When his little sister was born, at the beginning it was a nightmare for him because he could not bear the noise when she was crying. He still suffers when she is crying. On the other hand, his little sister now is his best friend. He is unable to express his feelings but when he wants to express his feelings, he comes into our hug and he hugs his sister too.
When he was 3 and a half years old, he started speech therapies but till now we haven’t seen any improvement. He makes only noises with his mouth and he screams when he wants something. He started saying some words but it was only what he heard from the television. Words without any point.
Our little boy goes to school. The doctors insist that he has to be in a normal school, not in a school with kids with special needs. He imitates the other children and they believe that it would be the best for him to be with children of a typical development. Unfortunately, the government doesn’t support us financially. Whatever we do for our son, we do it alone without any help, which is really difficult. The last month he is following music therapy too. We decided to follow this therapy because he loves music and we believe it could help him speak. But we cannot afford many hours because it is very expensive. He suffers from his autism and we feel that we cannot offer him what he needs; only love and support.
Last month, the school he attends asked from us to hire a special teacher for him because he is closed to himself. He lost even some words he used to tell us. The doctors, the therapists and the teachers insist to hire a teacher only for him, who could help him to stay focused in the class. They strongly believe that if he has a private teacher in the class he will manage to speak and work in a normal environment. Unfortunately, we cannot support it financially. The government is unable to support us and Stratos must have a teacher until the end of January. Otherwise, he will be sent to a special school without any care. Usually he is bullied by other children and he cannot say a word when he suffers. He is just crying and he is staying alone. We are convinced that if he has a teacher in the class, he will become the best student. Without help, he can’t do anything. The system of our country does not support children in his situation and we want the best for our son, as any parent.
We need your support in order to help our son. It is not only the therapies but also the doctors and now the school teacher is added to the expenses. We are desperate because we have no idea what will happen to him if he is left alone in a school without support.
Thank you very much for reading our son’s story. We will keep you informed for his situation.
