Recently my mom has been ordered by our landlord to leave our house. She pleaded with them to let us stay there because it will be very difficult to find and transfer to a new place with such a big family, let alone relocating my siblings schools. She has taken a bold step to buy a piece of land. She has tried so hard to collect money, but she just does not have any other people to help her.
Then she turned to me for help. I could not say anything to her; I did not want to hurt her. It also happens to be finals week, when most students are stressing over their tests and papers. I thought that my biggest worry would be my chemistry final, buts thats not true. I was so stressed last night thinking about all my finals and where to get this $4,000 that I could barely sleep.
The money I am requesting is to help my mom buy a piece of land, in order to be able to buy a house in future, so we do not have to move from place to place. It is her birthday on Christmas Eve, and it would mean the world to her if she knows that there are people who care about her and want to help her.
She is a mom to six kids who are all in school. She wakes up every morning at 3 am and goes to the local market in Pokhara, Nepal to buy the best vegetables and fruits to bring back to her own stand to resell, wishing to give them the best produce. Only with this small and unstable business she earns bread for all her children, pays ever-increasing rent, school fees, and gets her medicine. She often skips her medication because it’s too costly, sacrificing her own health for her children’s well-being. She likes working because she feels independent, but she sometimes tells me, “I want to lie down on bed and rest all day.” Despite being only forty, you could see in her face the lines of tears, wrinkles of worries. She says she never knew what happiness was for herself.
During my years growing up, I have silently watched my mom struggling, wishing that I was able to help her just as I understood her. I came to the U.S. in August 2012 to pursue my higher education after Georgetown University offered me a full scholarship. I am working part-time on campus, but I cannot make enough to support my mom and siblings. Every now and then, my sisters contact me to help with their school fees because my mom cannot help them. I help them with whatever I can.
I would be so grateful for any contribution that you can make. If you help me to help my mom in buying a piece of land, it will be one less pressure on me and will help my family obtain a better life. I will send you a thank you card or a painting for your contribution. I am pretty good at painting. You can see a few of my paintings by going to: http://kisusharma.wordpress.com/
