Helping Families Overcome Poverty

BeHealthy, Inc. is a non-profit organization promoting the health and wellbeing of the people of Eastern Kentucky. Eastern Kentucky is one of the most poverty stricken areas in the United States; four of the top five poorest counties listed in the 2010 US census are located in Eastern Kentucky. Poverty and poor health are closely related and it is a known fact that poverty increases the chances of poor health. Poverty can be both a cause and consequence of poor health.

Listed below are some of the health concerns our programs aim to assist.

Obesity: 33% (percentage of adult population)

Overweight: 65%

Smoking: 31%

Asthma: 18%

Hypertension: 57%

Diabetes: 10%

One of the biggest differences that can be made in these communities is to improve the overall health of each individual. It is not only about improving their current state of health but also teaching individuals how to maintain and improve their future health concerns. It’s about teaching school children proper hygiene and the importance of a healthy diet and lifestyle. It’s about promoting literacy in schools and to make sure that all children can have the same tools at home to learn as they do at school. If we can teach today’s children to lead healthier lives and to learn and enjoy school we will be able to change the future of these communities.

We also believe that one of the most devastating causes of poverty and impediment to progress in these communities is the high level of drug abuse. It is our aim to reduce the spread of prescription and illicit drug abuse through education programs to teens of all ages and promote counseling and treatment programs for those already suffering from addiction. It is our goal to help each and every individual get the help and assistance they need to treat their addiction and to improve their life.

We are also dedicated to our communities in helping those in need of financial assistance. Whether it’s paying for medications, rent, food, utilities, travel for medical expenses, and etc. We aim to help those in need. We are also there to help families in times of emergencies whether its funds needed after a house fire or a family needing help with funeral expenses. It is our mission to serve others.

BeHealthy, Inc. is an organization with a vision, a vision of a better and healthier tomorrow. We are a compassionate and caring group looking to help those in need. We are excited and encouraged to make a difference in peoples lives in the coming year but we must have funding to go forward.
