Helping Ecuadorian friend in need

I have a friend that does not know I am doing this.  They are from Ecuador and have been in the States for a few years.  Recently they moved to another city to be closer to the school that they commute to everyday and also they have a job to commute to as well.  Their vehicle has recently broken down.  Now the story on the vehicle is that it was supposedly repaired a month or two ago.  They spent over $2000 to repair the vehicle, but that was against their better judgement.  One of their family members told them to get it repaired instead of looking at another vehicle.  This was a mistake.  The repairs were shotty at best.  I had my mechanic take a look at the vehicle and he said that he wouldn't even touch the thing because of all the rigging and different things that have been done to the engine.  He said it needs a completely new engine.  Obviously my friend was very upset even before they found this out.  Long story short, they need a vehicle to commute to their classes and work.  We live in a city where the public transportation is one of the worst in the nation so that is not a viable option.  My friends has family nearby as well, but they are not able to help much at all.  My friend is a Mass Communications student and will become a citizen this year.    I wish I could help, but due to my situation in my personal life it is not an option for me.  I feel humbled because in the past I would have been able to help.  I just want them to be able to drive safely from one place to another so my friend can reach their goal and attain their degree.  I help as much as I can, but there is only so much one can do.  My friend lives with a roommate and between all the expenses there is not room for purchasing a used vehicle.  I can tell my friend is sad and depressed.  It hurts me because I know that is not who they are.  My friend is very bright, happy, has a big heart and is very sweet.  I hope my friend will be able to have transportation soon so they can be at ease for the upcoming fall school season.  Thank you for your consideration.
