Campaign Story
On December 28th and the 29th, 2020, Petrinja and the surrounding villages were hit by multiple earthquakes (the strongest one having a magnitude of 6.4 on the Richter scale). An earthquake of this magnitude would have caused loss of life, danger and substantial financial damage in any area. The epicentre was is one of the poorest areas in Croatia and signs of the war 25 years ago were still visible.
A large part of Petrinja and the surrounding area has been destroyed, roads are inaccessible and there is a direct and ongoing need for financial support. The Red Cross Croatia is doing a great job there, but as they have limited resources and logistics, help is provided on the locations where most people can be helped at once. In smaller villages this is more difficult, but not less needed. This is why we have decided to start this funding campaign, to give help to the individuals who need it most. The financial help is not meant as a 'one-off' event, but is meant to be long-term support until the people in this area are again able to have a decent, human life-standard. Sleeping in a tent or outside, not having warm water, not having warm meals are NOT a decent human life-standard and unfortunately this is reality now in the affected region. Help is not only needed to provide food and temporary shelter, but also the financial means to rebuild (or repair where possible) homes as much as possible.
As if this was not enough, the area has been suffering from a lot of aftershocks which don't only destroy more buildings, but also have severe psychological effects on everyone. The aftershock of 5.0 on the Richter scale (on January 6) would normally be considered a fairly heavy earthquake on its' own.
There is SO much damage and help needed that EVERY EURO will help! Help will be provided primarily to families with small children, to elderly people and to individuals with any type of disability. Each and every part of the funds that will be used to provide the needed help will be fully transparent to all of contributors.
