Jan 18 update

After exactly 1 month, Rhys will finally be sleeping in his own bed at home! 🥰🥰🥰

It was a hectic 2 days (apologies for a lack of update yesterday) preparing for discharge day both from home and the hospital.

We thank everyone for all the support we have received since Day 1. Your encouraging words made us stronger, your prayers lifted our faith further, and your financial help extended our blessings. All glory to God!

Now we start a new chapter of home-based/outpatient therapies, so we build on the big strides he has taken, sustain progress, and continue on the road that leads to full recovery. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

After the catheter was removed yesterday, Rhys was able to empty his bladder on his own this morning. Praise God!
Speech therapy tomorrow will have him chew on bigger chunks of food and see how far he can go. Please pray with us so that the NGT can be finally removed. This is the remaining item still attached before he can finally be discharged.
Cardio/main attending physician says he will provide clearance by Saturday. We look forward to having Rhys continue his recovery at home and are now preparing for his needs. We cannot thank everyone who has shared their time, resources, words of support and prayers to help us get through the past few weeks. All glory to God for each day's healing mercies.

Rhys first meal for mixed feeding is pumpkin soup which he also downed with some water. He ate this after his PT session where he was able to do 3 round trips on the parallel bars plus 10 counts of stand-up-sit-down.

He also did his OT in the rehab room where there are more tools available.

Neuro ordered some tests (cbc, sodium, potassium). Once results come in ok, each doctor will start giving clearances for discharge. 🙏🏼🥰

God-willing we will start on a new chapter of home based/out patient therapies in a couple of days. We know all of you will still be there to support us every step of the way, and for that we are sincerely grateful.

Rhys had his PT session for the first time in the rehab room. He walked 2 full round trips on the 3m long parallel bars. First round trip was a bit wobbly, but he got the hang of it on the 2nd try. Praise God for this significant progress! To add to this, he did not seem tired after the session and went on to watch TV.

He also continued to eat crackers, yogurt and water orally today; on top of what he got from the NGT. Cardio and Neuro will discuss his possible discharge. All glory to God!

Our sincerest gratitude to everyone who continues to support in every way possible. We pray that God bless you and keep you safe in these times.

PT had no plans of having Rhys walk today. But when asked, Rhys agreed to try. And he successfully walked a few steps with the aid of a quad cane! Doctors also approved PT sessions in the rehab room provided a splint will be attached to his right arm. They will start mixed feeding (NGT+oral) tomorrow as well.

Urodynamics scheduled tomorrow is postponed pending results of cultures of bacteria found in urinalysis this morning. Blood sugar levels also dipped to 60 last night. Good thing he was able to eat some of the leftover yogurt to alleviate.

Indeed morning by morning the Lord shows new mercies. All glory to God. We have received so much support in every form, some anonymously. Our hearts are full everyday with thanks for all who have been with us from day 1.

2 sessions of PT today had him stand for a new record of 9 minutes straight before getting tired. He has also started doing his exercises while sitting down on a wheelchair. His left side is very strong as noted by his PT. His right leg is getting stronger, but still sometimes lack coordination. Right arm still has a long way to go, but we did see him raise it and stretch it when he woke up.

Endo has reduced insulin dosage and said Rhys has progressed well in his recovery. Once NGT (feeding tube) is taken out, he can start taking in blood sugar maintenance in tablet form, no need for insulin injections.

He was able to sound out A-E-I-O-U with his voice in some early morning practice. Speech therapy had him pass the first test to getting the NGT removed. He successfully chewed and swallowed crackers, mango yogurt (which he enjoyed) and drank water from a glass on his own. One more successful test and goodbye feeding tube.

It is truly a blessing to see Rhys' typical facial expressions and hand gestures when he communicates with us. Great is Thy faithfulness Lord! With all our hearts, we thank all of you for your prayers and support.

"Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us. Because of our faith, Christ has brought us into this place of undeserved privilege where we now stand, and we confidently and joyfully look forward to sharing God’s glory." - Romans 5:1-2

PT session: Rhys is able to stand up twice for a total of 7mins. Rehab doctor just needs clearance from all doctors and then Rhys can start walking in rehab room. He didn’t seem to get too tired after the session today and watched TV after.

Speech therapy session had him successfully and comfortably swallowing down plain water. He also now responds “Oo” with his voice instead of just nodding his head. He also practiced using his hand with a spoon, eating ice cream. He started with small amounts with help, and eventually filled his spoon, using his hands more confidently.

We extend our gratitude to all of you as we continue to receive support in every form. All glory to God! Please continue to pray with us for Rhys’ recovery.

Urodynamics planned for Monday. This is to get bladder training and finally remove need for the catheter.

15 minutes sitting time during PT today, double that of yesterday. Praise God!

Rhys is able to communicate via writing. When asked what he wanted he wrote FOOD, RICE. 🥰🙏🏼

Speech therapy enabled him to do "aa" and "oo" sounds today. Therapist advised we can help him practice more outside the session. He is also able to swallow consistently on demand.

We can’t thank you enough for praying, supporting, watching for our daily updates and rejoicing with us every step of the way.

Rhys was able to sit up on his own for 7 minutes today in his PT. Praise God! He is also now able to move his right leg, which is getting stronger everyday. The right arm still has a lot to improve. Neuro says he can likely start sitting on a wheelchair in a few days.

Speech therapy focused solely on his voice today. So the ice cream and root beer will have to wait till tomorrow. OT says he has no motor delays, meaning he is able to execute to instructions immediately (he removes the peg from the hole when asked).

All glory to God for everyday wins towards recovery. We are grateful everyday for all your continued prayers and support. 🙏🏼🥰

Xray was done today and pulmo reduced need to nebulize from 3 to 2 times a day. Contact precaution was raised while waiting for C diff test results, which thankfully came out negative. Diet to be redrawn considering creatinine and potassium levels.

Therapy sessions continue today. He successfully swallowed some calamansi juice 3 times. He is still having difficulty with plain water. Tomorrow root beer and his favorite ice cream flavor will be used to stimulate swallowing further. He also had 2 PT sessions. He was not able to finish the one in the afternoon because he was tired. On all lighter note, Rhys joined a video call with our cousin where he smiled and waved.

Thank you for continuously praying with us for his full recovery. Praise God for the blessing of every day healing miracles.
