On September 28, 2018, tragedy struck in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia.
This area of the world saw a day of natural disasters the likes of which are incomprehensible. Earthquakes shook the cities to pieces. A phenomenon called “Soil Liquefaction” occurred where the ground shakes so hard, the soil no longer acts like solid ground, but instead acts like liquid. Entire buildings were swallowed by the Earth. And for Mother Nature’s grand finale, the area was then struck by a massive tsunami. The official total of those who lost their lives is over 2,000 now. But due to the nature of these events, the true count may never be known. Over 70k people have been left homeless.
Among them is my friend, Arung. While I have only known Arung for 6 months, it feels much longer. He is part of our online gaming community and his presence is like a warm light. You can almost see his smile through his words. And his primary objective every day is to make everyone laugh. That day, he lost his home and everything in it. He lost every public area he has ever visited. He lost countless neighbors, friends, and tragically his father.
Life as he knew it is over. But together we can help him create a new life! Our goal is to raise $3,000 to do this. And it would certainly be life changing. They say that every dollar counts and for this campaign that is especially true. The average annual income in his area is less than $2,000. To rent a house costs less than $75 a month. These funds will not only provide means for he and his siblings to regain housing, but also feed and clothe them while they rebuild their family home and help revitalize their community. Any funds above what the family needs to rebuild will be donated to the Red Cross.
