Help young girls realise their full potential!

Earlier this year, WORK180 ran SuperDaughter Day, an initiative to encourage young girls to have fun with science, engineering, technology and mathematics (STEM) activities in seven states around Australia.

Speaking about her daughter Belinda at a SuperDaughter Day event in Melbourne Lucy said, "I've spent most of my career in IT convincing myself I deserve to be there. I want a different experience for my daughter, and yet her confidence in maths is already slipping.”

Belinda’s experience is not unique, studies have shown that a majority of girls exhibit negative attitudes towards maths and science when leaving primary school. The gender stereotypes develop as young as six years old. Up to that point, girls believe they can be anything at all but sadly as they get older, their confidence in their STEM abilities continues to dip.

That’s exactly why we target girls aged 5 to 12 years together with their parents to dress up as superheros and exploring the exciting world of STEM. The girls also meet some amazing female role models in tech, enjoy cupcakes and receive a goodie bag to take home.

This year, the girls participated in a wide range of hands on activities, including;

• Robots
• Interactive Bug Displays
• Lego Mind Storms
• Visit from NAO the Humanoid Robot
• Jewelbots and interactive unicorn horns

The feedback from parents highlighted how much their daughters enjoyed the day and while nearly half of the girls attending SuperDaughter Day for the first time were unfamiliar with STEM, by the end of the day 94 per cent had an interest in STEM! This is our third event since 2016 and lots of girls are coming back year after year.

These events are run by activity volunteers on the day and while we had over 1,000 girls attend together with their guardians, there was hundreds of girls left behind on waitlists around the country.

Next year, we would like to reach 3,000 girls, including girls from low socio economic backgrounds.

We need funds to cover the management of logistics leading up to the events, venue hire, materials for activities, flights for volunteers, showbags and catering for the girls and much more.
