Calling all friends..........

Meet Willie and Roscoe.

Yesterday I stopped by the QT on Reidville Rd. While pumping gas I noticed a man pushing a grocery cart with a dog sitting up front. After filling up my car I parked out front for about 45 minutes watching this man and his dog. The man, Willie, stopped at the front door, put a stainless steel bowl on the ground and filled it with water for his companion, Roscoe. Then Willie pointed to the ground and walked into the QT. Roscoe didn’t move. He was not leashed but just sat there waiting for his friend to return. This orchestra of moves continued multiple times as Willie entered QT to get ice for Roscoe’s bowl and a few snacks for both of them.

Now I have seen many a “homeless”person on the street begging for money, not Willie. I watched him engage a few customers but there was never an exchange of money or food. Willie was not asking for anything. All he was concerned about was Roscoe. He made sure Roscoe had plenty of water and belly rubs.

As I sat there watching this I began to tear up. The true character of a man can be displayed in his love for his dog. Roscoe loved Willie and it was reciprocated.

After 45 minutes I couldn’t take it anymore. I walked up to Willie, careful not to embarrass him and asked if there was anything I could do for him. A teared up again, thank God for sunglasses, when he said he would appreciate a hot dog for Roscoe. I bought 2 hot dogs and handed them to Willie. He was very grateful while feeding Roscoe before himself.

Folks, Willie is a good soul. I know I’ve only talked with him for 20 minutes or so but a man that is rolling on the streets but cares for his dog that much, is ok in my book. Willie owns a 2002 Buick Century but it’s broken down. Without transportation he can’t get to a job, plus he needs to find a way to take care of Roscoe while he works. I’m still thinking about Roscoe but I think between all of us here we can get his car fixed.

So here’s my pitch. Can all of you share this story so maybe we can find a good mechanic that will help us get his car diagnosed and repaired? I have a knack for finding jobs so I’ll get to work on that piece. As far as Roscoe, I’m open for suggestions. I’m considering a GoFundMe account for Willie and Roscoe but that may not be necessary considering all you good folks and the people you know.

Oh, BTW, last night at 10:30 I rode by the QT again and there were Willie and Roscoe sleeping in the sidewalk of QT. Yep, I teared up again. A big shout out to Jay at QT for being such a great human being regarding Willie and Roscoe. I talked to Jay just to make sure and he said Willie is the salt of the earth who, like many, have had life throw him a curve ball. Jay has been very supportive and helpful regarding Willie and Roscoe.

As I said my good byes and shook Willies hand another man walked up to me asking for $1. I apologized and told him I just didn’t have anymore cash. Then what did I hear? Yep, Willie walked up to him, pulled out his wallet, which didn’t have much in it, and handed the man $1. Willie then said, “Do something good with it.” Ok, I teared up yet again.

Can we collectively help Willie and Roscoe? I pray we can.

Paul
