Virgie Sabate was diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis (MG) in 2017, an autoimmune disease that affects the communication between muscles and nerves, effectively weakening voluntary muscles all over the body (including the eyes, face, throat, limbs, and respiratory muscles).

Virgie's symptoms started out in the eyes, her left eyelid began drooping. Her neurologist prescribed her with Mestinon (pyridostigmine bromide), a pill that helps improve muscle strength in MG patients.

In October 2018, both of her eyelids started drooping and she could barely keep them open -- she was rushed to the emergency room in a government hospital, where opthalmologists had a difficult time treating her symptoms. She was then referred to a neurologist.

From October to December 2018, Virgie felt her arms getting weaker and weaker, to the point of barely being able to comb her hair or brush her teeth. She got tired easily, but didn't have any difficulties with breathing at that time.

Her neurologist then recommended her getting a thymectomy.

A thymectomy (removal of the thymus gland) is usually recommended for qualified MG patients in hopes of improving symptoms and eventually reaching long-term remission.

Virgie was scheduled for a thymectomy on February 8, 2019 at the Philippine General Hospital (PGH). Unfortunately, she went into respiratory crisis after surgery and spent 28 days intubated in the recovery room and the ICU.

As of this writing (March 11, 2019), Virgie is still in PGH ward 6 bed 24, and needs to get a BiPAP machine so she can go home. Her doctors won't discharge her until she procures a BiPAP machine, because she still can't breathe properly on her own.

A BiPAP machine costs around PHP100,000, and renting one costs around PHP800 per day. Virgie will need to be on a BiPAP machine for the next 6 months, until she regains her strength and is able to breathe on her own again.

We need P100,000, the initial quotation was wrong

Update posted by Chachie Pabalan at 08:07 am

Hospital staff initially informed Virgie that the BiPAP machine would cost PHP50,000. Upon verification, that amount can cover a C-PAP machine, which would not suffice for her needs according to her pulmonologist.A Bi-PAP machine actually costs around PHP100,000. We need to raise more funds so Virgie can finally go home.
