or the past couple years, we have been volunteering at about six (6) schools in rural communities, offering math and science enrichment classes, as well as positive youth development and leadership workshops. We have been able to reach 500+ learners per school in 2015, offering interventions in mathematics and science, career guidance and counselling, over weekends and public holidays. Classes are characterized by high number of learners (more than 60), and there are no resources like laboratories, libraries, computers, and even text-books. Recent strife in the community, and lack of resources has prevented us from continuing with the work.
About 200 learners from these schools will be taking their final Matric examinations this year, and most of them are lagging behind their syllabus due to loss of learning in the 4th quarter of 2015. We need to raise $500,000.00 during the upcoming June/July 2016 school holidays, in order to enroll these learners for a month-long math and science camp to assist them to prepare for their final Grade 12 examination. Your generous support will help subsidize tuition, organize accommodation and transportation for both learners and volunteers, feed the students, and even provide textbooks and other supporting materials for some of the learners. Funds will also be used to provide tutoring support for the months of August through November.
Any donations raised above and beyond our goal will be used towards supporting the Class of 2017 as they have also suffered the same misfortune.
