Cheetahs predicament in recent decades which can reach the speed of 70 miles per hour, is considered one of the world’s most endangered species by the Convention of International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES).

The major reason of their decline is due the loss of habitat, poaching and hunting (their hides and trophies cost lots of dollars), and also speared or shot by the pastoral-Nomad communities on retaliation when they happen to kill their livestock. Decline of their preferred species like antelopes due hunting and loss of habitat too have contributed to their mortality.

According to the researchers, the numbers of Cheetah plummet even in the protected areas due to competition from the larger predators like lion, leopard and cheetahs. This has resulted few individual fanning away to unprotected areas placing them in greater danger of conflicts with human.

Having features that include its lean body, long legs, large heart and expansive lung; then blending well with its additional speed, Cheetahs has never been able to protect themselves successfully. They got weaker jaws and smaller teeth than other predators, so they have difficulty in protecting their kill and a let alone cubs. This has meant that the population numbers for wild cheetahs are falling faster than for other big cat.

We are therefore starting a fund raiser to protect cheetahs in the all ways possible from the grass root; by training livestock guarding dogs, while monitoring the numbers of cheetah sightings inside and outside the parks.

SAVE WILDLIFE ENVIRONMENT EDUCATION PROGRAM is an organization that give environmental and wildlife education through the outreach program to the school and communities in the northern Kenya. We are therefore looking forward to your generous support in order for us to make a difference in saving these agile and beautiful animals in areas we live in. Remember even little contribution in good-will will make a great difference.

BACKGROUND

SWEEP is acronym for (save wildlife environment education program). SWEEP is community base organization for wildlife and environmental education programs, and its genuine concern and motivation are to enhance community both young and old in the nature conservation. It’s now registered as a {CBO} at the ministry of Social Services, but the project currently works at it is preference areas Waso Division, Samburu East District, Rift valley Province. Also it has not established an office but operate a mobile office at Sera Community Wildlife Conservation Trust.

Basically the communities will benefit in new ways livestock and rangeland management. Eventually there will be introduction of hybrids to cross with the locals, and introduction of animal’s health, livestock marketing and banking programs.

SWEEP recognizes that:
Ecosystem is made of a lot of different creatures, and together, they clean our water, our air, make soil, and absorb our carbon gases. So if the ecosystem is properly managed and utilized, it’s the principal engine and corner stone for our economic and social development, it’s a means for a nation building and reduction of poverty.

SWEEP knows that; very low attention is paid to wildlife and environment in developing countries and education to ecosystem has always been relatively low and it will always remain so, unless sustainable intervention met.
