Campaign Story
Cardona town in Rizal, which is located near the Laguna de Bay, has been placed under state of calamity after water hyacinths piled up in portions of the lake. Some barangays of Cardona have been isolated since no boats could sail due to the thick layer of the aquatic plants on the river.
The affected villages are Balibago, Tuna, Lambac, Boor, Malangam/Calibacan, Subay, Navotas, Ticulio, Nagsulo and Sampad, all on Talim island. Also affected were the villages of Looc, Dalig, Patunhay and Calahan in mainland Cardona.
The overwhelming amount of water lily also left little oxygen for the fish which, consequentially, impedes their growth and cultivation.
Around 1,000 families are already affected and asking for help to remove the invasive water lilies which greatly affects their main source of living.
Recently, one of the residents of Talim Island, Cardona died as he was not taken to the hospital which is located in the mainland because the motor boat cannot pass through the lake due to the overcrowded water lily.
