Help us Release our Red Howler Monkeys

Hello, welcome to our fundraiser!

Amazon shelter is a centre for the rehabilitation and release of wild animals based in the Amazon region of Puerto Maldonado in Peru.

We have been working for the past 14 years in the region to take in, care for and release animals who have been affected by habitat destruction, including logging and mining and from the illegal wildlife trade. Over the years we have looked after a variety of bird, mammal and reptile species and we currently have over 60 animals in our care, including 29 Howler monkeys, Macaws, Parakeets and eve a Tapir.

One of our main specialities is caring for and releasing Howler Monkeys and we have successfully released dozens of Howlers in the past.

Our release program takes into account all the health checks and tests that need to be carried out and we release all our animals in a protected reserve of primary forest many hours from the nearest town.

Our next release will be at the beginning of September, where we will be releasing 11 Adult and Juvenile Howler monkeys. For this we will need to pay for transportation, medicine, vets and accommodation. The minimum cost for a release like this is $2500, and we’d like your help to raise this.

Howler monkeys are notoriously difficult to keep in captivity and though we do our best to give them all that they need, many do not survive long term. Therefore it is especially important to release them as soon as possible.
