Who we are

Hello!

We are three University students who are working together with the INUA KIKE organisation, a small, female-run Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) dedicated to improving the lives of young women in the Mathare slums of Nairobi. Our mission is to help the lovely ladies of INUA KIKE raise funds to support single mothers feed their children in Nairobi during the COVID-19 crisis.

The Coronavirus pandemic is currently affecting almost everyone on the planet. We realize that many people are struggling, however the most severe impact is felt by those people who are already living in extreme poverty. This is the case in the slums of Nairobi.

The Mathare Slums & COVID-19

In the Mathare slums of Nairobi, the effects of the Coronavirus and the ensuing quarantine are felt especially hard, particularly by single mothers. Most of these women in this low-income community normally rely on odd jobs where they earn less than a dollar a day to feed their children, meaning they live hand-to-mouth. Due to the quarantine, there is no work and so these women have nothing to fall back on to provide for their families. They have no money for food, soap and other essentials.

The Kenyan government is attempting to help its people, but most of it is directed towards the elderly. What little support there is for these marginalized mothers is not reaching them in time.

This is where INUA KIKE comes in

INUA KIKE (Swahili for “Women Rising”) is a local NGO founded by young Nairobi mothers in Mathare. While they usually focus on helping young women in their community to complete their education to help them provide for their children, they are currently doing everything they can to help their community survive during the Coronavirus pandemic.

Seeing so many single mothers in their community struggle to feed their children during this crisis, the women of INUA KIKE are dedicating all their time and resources to help them.

Their efforts include donating masks, salt and cooking oil,but most importantly, they are trying to keep their neighbours from starving. The women of INUA KIKE are doing the best they can but simply need more funds to pay for essential items such as porridge, rice and soap. They hope to raise enough money to also provide other necessities like flour, sugar and sanitary products.

Our Goal:

For the bare minimum essentials, a household in the Mathare slums needs only around 1-2 USD a day or 20-30 USD a month to survive. INUA KIKE is hoping to help at least 200 households, or more if enough money is raised.

All proceeds will go directly to INUA KIKE and thus towards helping Nairobi mothers and their children to survive the pandemic.

We appreciate any and all donations, no matter how small, since any amount will make a difference in these families’ lives!
