Hello,

My family and I are in a financial crisis. We are $5000 in debt and need help. Childrens Aid Society is threatening to take away our daughter because of this situation, unless we can get the debt down or gone.

About us: My name is Tristan, I have been unemployeed for a few months now simply because its not easy to find work.
My new baby girl was born April 2013.
My wonderful fiance is Deanna.
We are both on Ontario Works(Welfare, for those who are not familiar with the name.), we only get $1,082 to live off of per month. Our current rent at our new home(moved in January 1st 2013) is $785, so that leaves us $297 to live off of a month. We have our own bills to pay, food to buy, etc. A left over amount of $297 after paying rent is not easy to live off of for a whole month with other expenses, with now needing to pay the credit card for the hotel.
A fully summary of our situation would simply be, on November 27th 2012 our landlords forced us out on the street making us homeless, but kept our belongings. We ended up needing to check into a hotel because we had no family to help us and friends had no room for us. To secure a safe place to live for January 1st, we had to use all the money we get and put it into a down payment for an apartment. This left us with no way to pay for the hotel we needed to live in until Janurary 1st. As well as needing to pay our origional landlords last months rent to not throw out our belongings left behind (this I hoped would be settled through court). The only way I could pay everything was to max out an emergancy credit card to cover 2 out of 3 expensives. I am simply asking for help to pay down the hotel bill so my family and I can go back to spending it on special baby formula(She is lactose intolerant) and supplies, and not spend the money on debt payments....Yes our landlords evicted a pregnant women for the month of Christmas. Although having Christmas morning with the hotel staff was sort of sweet, it was the only happy moment of the whole month.
And yes, we got there lowest rates possibly, at first it was the nightly rate, then we were switched to a weekly rate, then there monthly rate.

Deanna has severe aniexty as well as some health issues, and when we looked into other options besides living in a hotel for a month we knew that we would need to seperate and go to homless shelters for each of our genders; which would not be safe to leave her alone in a shelter by herself with being pregnant, it was advised to us by doctors that she not go to a shelter. Ontario Works has a Emergency Shelter Program (For Families), however, we were not approved because our child is not born yet.

We used food banks and food donations as much as we could, to make living at the hotel as cheap as possible, but we could only get items that could be heated in the microwave or toaster, and that were non-perishable food items because we had no access to a fridge. We also use the Canadian Mental Health Assossication, which provides us with a free dinner on weeknights to save money. Deanna also has severe allergies to Onions and Fish, so we had to be very careful with what she eats. Even after being extremely careful the hotel bill still is more than we can afford.

We need help paying off the credit card due to this situation we are in, which we can now state below in more details about how our landlords forced us out on the street. The credit card balance is $5,300 to cover the hotel, food and travel expenses.

Not only did the Landlords fumigate and put toxins around our living area, but they constantly harrassed us, did laundry past and before legal hours(located behind our bedroom), trespassed, etc, BUT they smoked weed in the house after we politely asked them not to.

The Landlord came out and banged on our car window, demanding we come downstair and fix his plumbing. He told us that we made our cats "shit down his sink" in the laundry room sink, it was a plumbing problem from the laundry which we had only use 3 times because the Female Landlord always had laundry to do and left it in for days. The Landlord handed us a coat hanger and demanded we fix it, we offered to buy Pipe Cleaner but he refused and made us do it anyway.

My fiance and I found moth balls filling the basement apartment that we rented for three months (note: there were over 20 moth balls in the basement that we found, and were not being used as instructed). We looked up what moth balls can do to you and it was very disturbing. We left the apartment and checked into a very cheap hotel, with no room service or anything special, just a simple free breakfast. We called poison control around 3am, we were advised not to go back to the apartment for our safety.

November 30th 2012 at 3:40pm
We went to the Service Oshawa building to file for a Bi-Law Officer to check out all the unsafe issues that we had with the place. Upon asking to file, the Service Representative told us that the unit was not legal to be rented out and that the Landlords had not registered with the Municipality that they were using it as a two-unit dwelling.

December 6th 2012:
Deanna's family doctor wrote a note saying that it was very unsafe for her and our baby to be living at the apartment, and we were once again advised not to go back.

December 7th 2012 at 3:10pm
Municipality Officer(Bi-Law Officer) Daryll Burr took a look outside and inside the apartment. We asked if any of the issues could be adressed(the issues are not listed as there are too many) and he told us "No, this is a R1C Zoning, the Landlords should be the only ones to worry about the problems. We are going to have to give you an eviction notice." We agreed and asked if there was any questions he had for us or anything he needed to know, he asked us for our Rental Lease. We had left it behind when we were in a rush to leave on the 27th. I went to go get it out of the drawer where we had stored it and it was gone, the Landlords had gone through our stuff and stolen our Lease. We noticed that a lot of our boxes and food had been moved around, and that our garbage had been ripped open.

December 28th 2012
We arrived at the house to pick up our belongings, the landlords had changed the locks on us. We paid for them to store our stuff for a month(with our last month rent deposit; until January 1st) because it was unsafe to live there and we couldn't bring everything to the hotel with us, but they were harrassing us so much that we had to move it on the 28th and not January 1st. When we moved we noticed that our boxes had been searched through again, and they had gone through all our belongings, again.

January we had our court case through the Housing Tribunal. We hoped that donations would be a last resort and that the Landlords would pay for the very simple cost, considering what they did. Unforunately the Housing Tribunal was not allowed to "Touch" the case because the Landlords told the Judge that we shared a kitchen, which we did not. Stupid really, but unforunately we are not the first tenants that they have done this too. They told Mediation that we left the house looking like a mess when we moved out, which was a lie, we cleaned the entire basement after we moved out.
The Judge dismissed the case because he was not legally allowed to deal with the issue because of the "Shared Kitchen" that the Landlords lied about. The Judge said we would have to take them to Small Claims Court to get anything dealt with, sadly, we cannot afford that.

NOTE: We are not asking for donations to take them to Small Claims Court(as much as we would love too), but to pay off the credit cards.

So thats our story. What we could summarize anyway. Besides what was listed, there was constant flooding, no heat, personal injury due to them installing a kitchen sink incorrectly, fireplace was never checked for gas leaks, our hot water was turned off multiple times. We never had a notice of entering our basement, or to do any repairs.

Anything helps, really!
