Help us in Organic Farming

I, Ranadeep Saha an entrepreneur by birth and loves to take challenges and always start something new. In 2011, I started Darjeeling Bikes the first bike rental, the first bike rental in the region. It was performing very well with almost zero competitors till 2016 and then we had competition and by 2019 there were more than 25 competitors. And since 2017 our business is growing very well. We are the first company to get listed in TripAdvisor and currently have the most number of reviews.

So with the increasing demands by the start of 2020, we started developing a mobile app to book the bikes automatically online and it was supposed to be in the play store by April 2020, but the Pandemic change the entire situation.

Tourism is the worst affected industry in the Pandemic. And as more than 80% of our riders were going to Bhutan, we literally had no source of income to date as Bhutan has yet not opened its gate and it might take another 6 months to open its gate, as per the news we have.

As we were jobless and the bug for doing something new takes us to organic farming. It was also in my mind to do something in farming but not now but sometimes later. So we started learning about it from online platforms and take a course on organic farming from COFAM, a wing of the University of North Bengal.

So in September 2020 by selling some of our bikes we started organic farming of vegetables and fruits. So we took 3.33 acres of land on lease for 10 years and started cultivation. But as monsoon extended in this region till the first week of October, we were late in sowing and incurred some losses. Also, the investment is more than we calculated. And we have arrived at the time where we have to sow again but have exhausted all our money. Although we will get some return from our crops planted such as tomato, capsicum, chili, strawberry but it will take time. Also, we need money to pay for day-to-day expenses & maintenance.

Our mobile application for bike rental is almost ready which we will be launching on 1st April 2021, before the summer season.
