The Michaelis School of Fine Art at the University of Cape Town is holding the 2021 Final Year Graduate Show this December. A dynamic collaborative student art show, exhibiting the best of UCT’s undergraduate artists and their works. This is your opportunity to become part of the experience and join us on this artistic journey by helping us reach our financial goals in order to make this show come to life.

Our goal is an estimated ZAR 100,000.00 to be raised by July 2021 for the exhibition to take place. This gives our teams time to organise and allocate funds for what we need to bring the show together. The raised funds will go towards putting together and printing the group catalogue of the show which will be available for purchase, advertising for the event, food and drinks for the grand opening, vinyl’s, names tags, to just name a few. This sum will also be used in aiding students in materials and services costs such as set-up costs during their year. The student catalogue is a long standing tradition for the graduate shows at the Michaelis School of Fine Art. The catalogue includes all the artworks from every student as well as information about the students and their year. As well as serving as a documentation of that final years’ work, the catalogue is also sent to many of the local galleries and art houses as a great opportunity for us young artists to get our names into the art world and kick start our careers post-graduation.

The Covid-19 pandemic has forced every sector of society to make major shifts in how they operate for the health and safety of everyone involved, and the academic and art sectors are no exception. The global pandemic means that as students, we have had to rethink the way things work and the way that fundraising, exhibition management and preparations have been done for years. The pandemic has pushed our exhibition and community engagement to expand into the digital realm. Fifty-four student artists from all over the country and the globe are coming together to pioneer the global digital artist and academic platforms, and you can join us on the journey here and now.

We have created a wide range of ways for our communities to get involved and invest in the students and the graduate show; to help support these student artists, keep up to date with our upcoming events and easier ways to donate from anywhere at any time.

You can check out our Patreon page under the name Michaelis Grad Show 2021 and donate to help us meet our goal as well as keep updated on our other fundraising events and projects. We also have our silent auction to help in the mid-year, our online student-run thrift store and other upcoming engagement projects for you to invest in and become a part of. Art plays an important part in society, holding a mirror to society and history. It captures the essence of the human experiences and these are unprecedented experiences. Be a part of these historic times and help us make this graduate show a possibility.

The Michaelis School of Fine Art and their student-led projects are committed to the health and safety of all staff and students as well as members of the public involved in any way. All Covid-19 protocols are followed and up held by all parties involved to ensure full safety.

Welcome to the Michaelis 2021 Graduate Show. Join us now!
