India - which has the third highest number of infections globally, after the United States and Brazil - recorded 28,701 new cases on Sunday, with the densely-populated megacities of New Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai continuing to drive the outbreak.
However, for public health experts, a surge in cases in India’s vulnerable rural hinterlands and regional hubs is provoking the greatest concern and demonstrates clear evidence that Covid-19 is prevalent right across the subcontinent.
India’s most populous state of Uttar Pradesh - home to more than 200 million people - was placed under a strict weekend curfew which will remain in place until the end of the month. Here the total number of Covid-19 cases has risen by more than 300 per cent since the nationwide lockdown ended on June 1.
