Campaign Story
1. Introduction
Tanzania Youth Development Organization was founded in the year 2009 to work for improvement of children, young people and women lives in Tanzania through information sharing, training, research, education and innovative early interventions; bridging the gap between theory, policy and practice. We are legal registered Charity with reg no. ooNGO/00003790 authorized to carry community activities countrywide.
2. Project Summary
We are working with FGM activists on the ground, together with district and regional officials, to protect girls from Female Genital Mutilation in Tanzania via supporting outreach work in the village and with schools, and offering safe spaces for girls refusing to be cut, particularly during cutting seasons.
3. Challenge
We want to enable young women to fulfill their role as independent, income-earning adults, able to occupy responsible administrative, commercial or political posts. In this way they'll be competent to influence decisions on behalf of women and girls and serve as role models for the community; and when they marry to be better mothers, providing for the personal needs of their families and lifting their aspirations. That way they will be the anti FGM ambassadors of the future.
4. Solution
This project will enable activists on the ground to carry out outreach work in the areas where girls are at risk of FGM and early marriage and enable girls refusing FGM to be protected, especially during cutting seasons until their parents sign an affidavit that they will not be cut and they can be returned to their families. It will also allow girls to continue their education or learn a trade so that they can be self sufficient.
5. Long-Term Impact
Where possible girls will attend certificated courses which will give them much better employment prospects and could lead to other Further Education opportunities e.g. Nursing. They will become well-rounded young adults able to become decision makers in their communities. They will be role models for younger girls and be able to campaign effectively against FGM and premature marriage. They will gain much personal fulfillment.
