In early February 2022 Save A Greek Stray received reports of abuse and neglect for the dogs of Sparta’s Municipal Shelters. Following investigation and close examination of the shelters, on February 22nd Save A Greek Stray entered the premises by court order to encounter what could only be described as a death camp. Dogs starved with no food or water chained and living in their waste, some dead and rotting, others severely sick or mauled. Out of approximately 400 dogs accounted for, 44 were immediately removed for medical treatment. Authorities arrested the deputy mayor and two shelter employees on criminal charges.
Today, after volunteers groups were finally allowed access and many of the dogs were removed and taken to better living conditions about 180 dogs remain in the two municipal shelters of Agia Kyriaki & Xyrokampi in Sparta.
Of those, the 50 dogs in Xyrokampi have spent their life chained not once able to walk without a leash pulling on their neck.
TOGETHER! Let’s raise the funds necessary to purchase large cages where up to two dogs can live & walk off leash until the day comes when they finally meet their forever family!
Funds in excess of our goal will be used for food, medical supplies and attention and other much needed items for the neglected dogs of Sparta's Municipal Shelters.
We thank you for your love and support for those who have no voice.
A small gesture can change someone’s universe.

We reached over 2600 euros!Update posted by Konstantinos Zouganelis at 09:37 pm
This number is a milestone & translates to the purchase of up to five large cages/enclosures potentially letting 10 dogs offleash!!! Some things we would like to clarify here: We say "potentially 10 dogs" which may sound inaccurate. These animals have not been properly socialised and until recently were underfed. . . . .
