Campaign Story
I am a Public Health professional, trained in UK, USA and Australia but have lived most of my life in Kenya. Where I am now, near a beach that is a top tourist destination, I am surrounded by families whose children suffer from tungiasis (jiggers, chigoe) caused by a female sand flea which burrows into their feet. The children cannot sleep or concentrate on school work, walk, run or play with their friends due to the pain and itching, and are often ridiculed by others. There is no available treatment and in their desperation they and their parents cut their feet with dirty knives, plant thorns or use boiling water, toxic veterinary chemicals or kerosene causing more harm and bacterial infection. A community in Kenya are using a herbal medicine containing neem and coconut oil, known to be effective against insects and good for healing skin. We are seeking funds to help support a clinical trial to test whether this herbal medicine is effective. This disease is completely ignored by the World Health Organization making it very difficult to obtain funding for research and treatment trials. We are a group of qualified clinicians and scientists in Kenya, and are close to receiving scientific and ethical approval to conduct the trial, but cannot conduct it until we can cover all of the costs.

I know this small donation will be used wisely to provide much needed assistance to a problem that most people are not even aware of. Thanks to Lynne for her commitment to this.
