Hi everyone, welcome to my GoGetFunding page!
I'm Tian, a 20-year-old Malaysian student with a dream to study Nutrition in Australia. I have set up this fund-raising page with a hope to get your support for me to pursue my Bachelor of Science, majoring in Food Science and Nutrition(Dual Major) in University of Queensland this coming July.
Here’s a little info about me:
I am a student from Malaysia. I finished secondary school in 2016 and started Cambridge GCE A Levels in the following year. Almost a year ago, I've completed my A Level studies and now I need your help to make my dreams come true.
I've always been curious about what food can do to our bodies. I like knowing myths people have about food and finding out what's the reality behind them. And I believe everyone is unique and needs different types of diet. These lead me to the decision of pursuing a degree in Food Science and Nutrition in Australia and follow up with postgraduate studies -Master of Dietetics.
Why am I seeking help?
I come from a family with average income and my parents are unable to finance my studies in Australia as the amount required is too huge. Months ago, I have already started browsing websites, looking for any possible scholarships or grants. I also went around asking people I know about any possible sponsorship for students like me they may have heard of. After months of effort, I ended up facing the reality that there's almost no chance for me to study my dream course in Australia. Local scholarships are limited and most of them have preferred courses, where nutrition and dietetics is often not on the list. Some with preferred universities, where listed universities do not offer the course I wanted to study.
Anyhow,I will not stop searching for scholarships although there's a minimal chance of finding one that suits.
I have already received my offer letter from the university and the intake is in July. I really hope I can get to study a course I have been longing for all these times,in one of my dream universities.
What I have been doing for the past few months:
Beside looking for funds, I am currently trying to contact hospitals for me to shadow a dietitian so I am able to gain deeper insights of the role of a clinical dietitian. I have tried many ways but my effort was to no avail as hospitals in Malaysia do not seem to have such practice.
After making the decision of studying nutrition, I have received quite a lot of dissuasion from people around me. I am thankful for the fact that my father is being supportive and understanding, but he has also revealed to me that our family finance does not allow me to study in Australia. Although it’s barely possible but I’ve decided to source my own funds to reduce the financial burden I am imposing on my parents throughout these years. As a temporary plan, I worked in a boutique, hoping to save some money for university. Knowing the pay probably will not help much, I tell myself I'm trying my best to reverse the situation. However, I resigned a month ago due to my knee injury so i can get enough rest for it to recover.
I would also like to tell you more about what I want to do in future:
Upon graduation,I want to be a dietitian and influence people’s food choice and eating behavior. I want to contribute to the society by giving health talks on diet-related disorders and hold cooking classes that targets audience with a specific illness and their caregivers.I believe each of us has different nutritional needs based on our lifestyle, genetic heritage and health conditions. It is crucial for us to know what type of diet suits. For this reason, I will make full use of what I have learned in university to educate the public on the practical ways in which they can improve health and prevent disease by adopting healthier eating habits.
It has taken me some time to finally decided to share my story through this platform.I came here knowing that there are still ways to seek help and I believe that there are people outside there who are willing to lend a hand and to invest in one's education.
Your donations will be used to cover my tuition fee:
(Taken from my UQ offer letter)
Indicative annual tuition fee- AUD$42,400
The course lasts for 3 years
Indicative total program tuition fee-AUD$134,985
If I am lucky enough to raise sufficient fund for my tuition fee and successfully made it to study in Australia, I will work part-time to cover my living expenses and all the miscellaneous fees.
It is definitely not easy to find ways to fund my studies, I am well aware that the path of me pursuing my nutrition degree will be a bumpy one but I am trying to figure a way out.
I truly appreciate your help to make my dream possible. I am very grateful for your support and just to let you know, even a small donation could make a difference! Thanks for your attention and a million thanks for your kind hearts.Have a nice day:)
