We have come a long way since Theodore's tummy problems came to light last January. He has had two corrective surgeries. The first surgery was in 2 February to correct the intestinal malrotation. During the surgery, Theodore's appendix was removed and a colostomy was performed following the result of his rectal biopsy that is consistent with Hirschsrpung Disease.
Theodore spent 15 days in the hospital, 10 days without food or water while waiting for his small intestines to heal. He was sent to the OR the second time during this admission for an IV cut-down. During those times, he became depressed. He stopped talking his baby talk, he stopped smiling and he cried everytime he saw a doctor or a nurse. But he was a courageous little man and he is admired by the nurses and medical staff who met him because of that.
A second surgery was done last 6 March to remove the portions of his large intestine affected by the Hirschsprung Disease. The surgery was supposed to be scheduled on 13 March but was made early because of his bleeding colostomy. He underwent an endorectal pull-through and his colostomy was also repaired. Theodore recovered well and was discharged within 5 days.
Theodore's final surgery is scheduled on 15 April 2015. This time, the surgeon will close his colostomy so he can poop normally. This final surgery will be the end of his year-long battle with several tummy problems. If successful, Theodore should be able to fully absorb nutrition and thus, finally enjoy a normal and healthy childhood.
With Theodore's tummy problems over, we will focus on his kidneys next. Theodore has Bilateral Medullary Nephrocalcinosis. There is no root cause established yet but it might be metabolic. Until we get to the bottom of his kidney problems, Theodore will be highly susceptible to UTIs, kidney stones and kidney infections. He is currently on two maintenance meds but he still gets UTIs; in fact, as of this writing, he is suffering from another bad infection. :(
Theodore's health issues have drained all of the family's financial resources. We are deep in debt and without your help, we will not be able to fund the last surgery and the subsequent medications.
