The Rescue Group of Marine Animals of Trujillo, in Spanish “Grupo de Rescate de Animales Marinos de Trujillo” (GRAM - Trujillo) of the Association CONSERVACCION, which was formed in March 2016 with the purpose of support local authorities in the rescuing of marine animals stranded alive off the coast of Trujillo, La Libertad (Peru). Currently, we have supported in more than 100 cases to: the environment division of the Peruvian Police (PNP), the Specialized Attorney in Environmental Matters (FEMA), the Regional Management of Agriculture and the Institute of the Sea of Peru (IMARPE).

The vast majority of these cases have been seabirds and sea lions. As for example, during “El Niño” in 2017, where, unfortunately, we did not cope with the numerous cases of seabirds due to difficulties in logistics. Between 2016 and 2017 we have sea lions with intoxication signs, maybe caused by fishermen conflicts. This 2019, we have faced unusual cases, such as the appearance of almost 20 grey shearwater in houses, streets and factories, and other cases that are becoming more repetitive year after year as is the appearance of juveniles of guano birds such as pelicans, boobies and cormorants on the beaches of Huanchaco, Trujillo - Peru. We work, through environmental education, to avoid bad actions of the population in front of stranded animals, by informing them about the dangers and recommended actions to take (such as keeping a safe distance and not touching the animals); this through activities all year long at the beaches and our social media.

Most of the time we are no able to perform a correct rehabilitation because of the lack of marine rescue centers in the country and financial support. In order to improve our actions to care for animals stranded alive, especially of the ones cataloged by Peruvian law and international organizations as in danger of extinction, we are asking for donations.
