We are the Noordwijk family. We live in Johannesburg, South Africa. My name is Andre, my wife is Anne and our son, Calvin, is 15. Calvin is a very promising rugby (football) player and it has always been his dream to become a professional player. Throughout his school career he has always been chosen for the first teams of his age group.

But that dream is now being threatened. I have been with my current company for seven years, but because of the turmoil in the industry, they have retrenched around 30% of the workforce. I was part of that 30%. It has been about two months and because of my age - I’m 45 - I am struggling to find other employment. On top of that, because of limited funds, I had to go off my medication for MDD - Major Depressive Disorder - and have subsequently relapsed into severe depression and have to be hospitalised. Anne still has her job, but sales people in South Africa are not paid enough to sustain a household.

This plea is not for me, but mostly for my boy. Kids should not have to give up on their dreams, but as things are now, soon there will not be enough money for him to stay in school. He is such a happy and caring child and it breaks my heart thinking of him having to give up on his dream...

The $5000 we are trying to raise will mostly go towards Calvin’s school fund and my medication. As long as we can pay for his school fees for this year... I know God will show us the way and provide for his remaining years in school.

I hope you can find it in your hearts to help a decent, struggling family keep their boy in school.
