1. What are we trying to do? [Help a homeless Woman: Meena]
Dear kind-hearted well-wishers,
We would like to raise funds to put a roof over the head for a homeless housecleaner and her family. The lady’s name is Meena and she lives in a rundown, overcrowded hamlet without proper sanitation. She has been working hard since the age of 7 when her aunt brought her to Delhi and forced her to work in people’s houses as a cleaner. Meena says the life was tough as she was away from her family, she was missing her mother and could not understand the language of her employers. (Meena’s mother tongue is Bengali).
Meena never had the opportunity to go to a school and she cannot read or write but she wants to educate her children. Since the age of 7, she has been earning her living by doing the cleaning, washing dishes, cooking, laundry, caring for elderly etc. She has a beautiful heart and looks after everyone else. She does whatever comes her way to help her family. Now Meena is around 30 years old and married.
Her family includes Meena herself, her husband Parimal, their 8-year-old daughter Khushi and 5-year-old son Shiva. Her husband is a labourer. A few years ago, he suffered from cancer and with her efforts and with the help of her kind employers, he has survived but can only do some limited work. Meena earns around £130 per month out of which a substantial part goes to pay rent and very little left for food. It is a hand to mouth existence
Meena lives in a tiny single room house. This is her living, sleeping, cooking, eating and resting area. It has no running water. She has to go to public water supply area to fetch water for drinking & cooking. Water supply is a communal water tap around 250 yards away from her residential place.
There is one public toilet, one bathroom and some laundry area used by over 100 people.
Meena is a very honest, hard-working person with very high work ethics. She needs your kind support to realise her dream. You can help her by donating whatever you feel appropriate.
I thank you in advance for your support.
