A few dollars' worth of metal and plastic can restore mobility and independence to amputees and others suffering from orthopedic disabilities. As little as £20 provides corrective braces for a child with clubfoot -- and your gift of giving here could do even more.

The causes of limb loss and limb deformity are many, and terrible: war and its legacy of abandoned landmines, harsh working conditions, accidents, congenital conditions left untreated. No matter what the cause, the end result is the same: a loss of mobility and independence.

The disabled are often the poorest of the poor. Rehabilitation services are minimal and too expensive, especially in rural and remote areas. Unable to support themselves, amputees and other mobility-impaired children and adults often rely on handouts and are condemned to lives of immobility and neglect.

For those unable to walk, regaining mobility is a critical first step on the long road to recovery. With the gift of a prosthetic foot or leg, amputees can work and provide for their families. Children can go to school and develop much-needed friendships. Parents can care for their children and contribute to the enrichment of their community.

With the gift of a prosthetic arm or hand, disabled women can once more tend their gardens, pick up their babies, and participate in making crafts to help support their families.

You can help. More and more donations you give goes directly toward helping the poor in the developing world regain what they have lost. Your donation could help fund corrective braces for a child born with clubfoot, prosthetic leg or arm components for amputees, orthopedic surgery, or even a complete prosthetic limb.

Prosthetics Outreach Foundation provides access to prosthetics, orthopedic surgery, physical rehabilitation, and even non-medical assistance, such as micro-lending, in order to create opportunities for children and adults in developing countries who suffer from limb loss and limb deformities to lead more fulfilling lives. Over the last 15 years, ableize has helped more than 13,000 children and adults to walk again. By working with local people to craft the prosthetics in-country, ableize helps countries work towards meeting the needs of their own disabled people without external assistance.
