Hello!

We are Daniela, Gordon and Ricardo. We come from Portugal and Scotland, and are currently volunteering in Kenya for the Makuyu Education Initiative. It’s a non-governmental organization located in Makuyu, Kenya. We are taking care of 15 children (both boys and girls) who come from various backgrounds of poverty.

The organization provides them with food, clothes, a place to sleep and helps them with their studies. That being said, there’s still a lot to improve in the children’s home. The most important things we need right now are:

  • Medicine

From time to time, a child gets sick and the house doesn’t have basic medicine or first aid kits in case of emergencies. This will be our priority.

  • Kitchen appliances (fridge and blender)

Things like milk or meat have to be bought every day and there’s no way to store cooked food for too long as it will spoil. Also, as we have a lot of mosquitoes and dust in the air, it’s not hygienic to keep food out in the open. A blender would help us make juices for the kids and cook more diverse types of meals.

  • More diverse meals

We wanted to diversify the kid’s meals by introducing fruits and other ingredients they don’t usually eat, that are important to their growth and well-being.

  • Building a fire oven (from scratch)

Having an oven would expand the diversity of meals we could cook for the kids (right now the food is mainly stewed or fried), including making things they have never tasted before.

  • Replacing the blackboards in the classrooms

The ones we are currently using are old and filled with holes and imperfections, and they are very important for the classes that the kids have at home (Maths, English, Swahili, Science, Social Studies).

  • General maintenance

Many walls are in need of a repaint, some chairs are breaking apart, and other minor things we would like to improve.

  • Umbrellas

The rain season is starting and the kids have to walk a few kilometers to school every day under the rain without protection.

  • Travel

It’s important for a child to learn about the world he lives in, and travelling with them to historical locations in Kenya would be beneficial for them. Or maybe take them to do something fun they don’t usually get to do from time to time, like going to the beach. Some have never even seen the sea. They just started their school holidays in November so we will take the opportunity to do all of this.

We will use any money we raise, even if we do not meet the desired goal, and will update our Facebook page and website with the new improvements to the home and to the children’s lives. You can find our pages using the following links: http://www.moco2makuyu.org/ (Website) and https://web.facebook.com/Makuyu-Education-Initiative-252603888102613/ (Facebook page).

Even if you don’t have the possibility to donate, we would be very thankful if you liked our Facebook page and if you could share some of our posts, so we can reach as many people as possible.

Any contribution, no matter how small, would make us incredibly grateful and would certainly help make a difference in these children’s lives. It is our mission as volunteers to leave our mark and help this incredible organization grow as much as possible, allowing these kids to have the best possible future while fulfilling their goals.

Thank you so much for your time and help!

Olá!

Somos a Daniela, Gordon e Ricardo.
