Help the bunnies in Iceland!

In Iceland there are a lot of wild bunnies that come from house bunnies that were set “free”. Unfortunately they aren’t as free and living their best life as many people think, they are not made for Icelandic winter.

In Reykjavík we have a valley that is called Elliðaárdalur and there are a lot of bunnies that live there. There were a few women that were feeding them and keeping count and we had around 150 bunnies! When rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus type 2 (RHDV2) hit Elliðaárdalur, we knew something had to be done! We couldn’t just sit and watch as they died. We lost so many bunnies and they are still dying. We decided to start a non profit organization and a bunny rescue.

We started to catch them, we used facebook to ask for volunteers to become foster homes and asked for cages and help. There were so many people that helped us and the bunnies, we rescued 40 bunnies and then some of them had their litter and then we had 36 baby bunnies.

We couldn’t take in more bunnies because we had no place to put them and we only had around 20 bunnies left.. today there are around 50 – 60 bunnies and we still want to rescue them all! Get them vaccinated and neutered and make a safe place where they can live out their life. Our dream is to have housing in Elliðaárdalur where they can come inside and stay warm and have enough hay, pallets and water.

We work as volunteers and all donations that we get are used for medical bills. Some were sick and hurt. Our dream is to have a bunny rescue center where people can bring their bunny to instead of letting them go “free” and a safe place for sick bunnies that need help and extra need.
