Campaign Story
The Krikati Indigenous Land, located in Maranhão between the Amazon and Cerrado, is one of the most affected indigenous lands today. Its area, 144.000 ha, is surrounded by Transmission Lines, Roads, many farmers who have not left the territory yet and many illegal loggers invading the territory to get wood. In 2020, the Krikati was the indigenous lands with most of the fires in Brazil.
Based on the entire context presented above, indigenous leaders and the community created a strategy to face these challenges to protect the territory. One of the actions planned is the strengthening of the GUARDIANS groups. The guardians are indigenous who are protecting the territory against loggers, hunters and other invaders with bad intentions. Their focus is primarily on the environmental monitoring of the territories. They are a permanent channel of communication between villages, lands and peoples, in the search for broader territorial protection and management.
Today, the guardians' biggest challenge is the lack of financial conditions to carry out their activities (protecting the territory, communicating between villages, etc). The financial help they had from the federal government has been cut after Bolsonaro got in office and their work is currently stopped, since the car and their motos are broken.
This fundraising will help them to fix their car, motos, buy a new uniform and carry out the operations patrolling the indigenous territory.
