My name is Thato Nolwazi Mosiuoa. I live in Johannesburg, South Africa. I am 18 years of age. I am a student at Curro Aurora in Johannesburg. This is my final year of high school. I have maintained a grade average of A and have been highly involved in various extra curricular and out of school activities.
I have recently been accepted by the Yale Young Global Scholars Program to attend the Sustainable development and social entrepreneurship(SDSE) session in New Haven, Connecticut from the 8th to the 21st of July 2018. This session focuses on the exploration of innovative solutions to challenges that the international community are facing, and aims to prepare students to solve problems related to particular areas of interest such as global health, international development, environmental sustainability, and gender equality. Within the two weeks I will be immersed in the interdisciplinary study and problem solving of issues identified in the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals tackling topics from poverty alleviation to human rights to environmental protection to health and well-being.
I am seeking assistance to attend this program because I believe the program will empower me with the tools needed to positively contribute to my community. The program will help to think critically, interdependently and innovatively. Furthermore I believe this program will help me to grow in the spheres of leadership and entrepreneurship that are so needed to develop Africa. In my school work and out of school work I have started to make particular strides in these areas. I had a year long program at the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) where I learned and contributed a lot to the vision that as youth we would like to see of South Africa. I have started a Podcast called Dear All People whose purpose is to create awareness of what an African youth's perspective of the world is. Lastly, I have started a business which I hope to grow well into the future customizing clothes. In future I would like to use this business to create clothing using sustainable materials.
