Help Sustain Shamarrah's Life

Dear Kind Heart,

Like most couples, my husband and I were very happy when we found out that we were pregnant. It was the happiest day of our lives and we were looking forward to meet the living manifestation of our love. However, her coming into our lives is one enveloped in fear and worry. I was on my 30thweek when I had vaginal bleeding. We were thrice in the hospital and on the third time, I gave birth to our daughter.

My daughter, Shamarrah Phaye, was born pre-mature last September 14, 2018. She weighed 900 grams and while her gestation age was 32 weeks, her size is only that of a 26 weeks baby.

God is good. Shamarrah did not have to be intubated when she was born. Her lungs were functioning okay despite her size and age. However, we remain confined at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. She had some complications. Some days after her birth her abdomen kept on swelling. She had an infection and needs to have her IV on her largest vein. We felt so scared that she had to undergo such operation. When this was successful, we thought she would already be okay but every time she was fed, her abdomen kept on swelling. The doctors have given her medication but nothing helped to reduce the swelling. She can’t be fed more than 7mL. On another x-ray, we found out that she has Hirschsprung Disease and that she needed to undergo colostomy. Only then was she able to consume milk. The operation was successful and now she is feeding at 20mL and we hope that she will only continue to gain weight.

While our hearts are happy that she is healing, we remain in deep sadness and difficulty because she has hydrocephalus and as soon as she is able, a shunt operation has to be done. For now, we need to maintain her medicines to reduce the growth of water in her head.

We are working on our own but our resources are not enough. We finally decided to reach out to good people because no matter the amount, we know that it can help us. At the moment, our hospital bill is more than a million pesos (>$20,000). We also need money for Shamarrah’s maintenance medication for the hydrocephalus and the needed operation when she is able. We hope that you can help us sustain Shamarrah’s life. No matter the amount, we know that it can help us and will be able to heal Shamarrah.

Sincere gratitude from a new mom,
Rivah
