Campaign Story
During a recent volunteering trip to Calais 'Jungle', I got to learn first hand what life is like living in the camp, and it's not pleasant. As part of my volunteering I partook in various activities to help the refugees of the camp, one of which was teaching English. It brought me back to my time when I taught EFL, English as a Foreign Language, and reminded me how much I loved it. And it was equally as enjoyable in the camp, if not more so. The refugees are so lovely and so appreciative of your time and efforts to help them. And not only does it benefit them by enabling them to communicate in a new language that may make their lives just a little bit easier, but it also helps with their mental well-being. Some of the refugees have been in the camp a long time, they've travelled far and have experienced and witnessed traumatising atrocities, and to be able to get some education whilst in the camp, can be life-changing, and a huge relief to the mundane, and hopeless life there.
It was apparent that there was a huge need for consistent, long-term English teaching there, and I knew, after a moment of clarity, that it was what I was meant to do. But unfortunately, as always, it is necessary to have funding to enable this to happen, and that's why I've set up this fundraising page.
Initially I'll continue my work alongside Care4Calais, the volunteer group I went over to originally. They are a fantastic group that help the refugees in numerous ways. http://care4calais.org/ and they have been making efforts to put in place a programme of English outreach teaching throughout the camp. I will, alongside other fantastic volunteers, teach both in the school that only has 2 permanent french teachers at the moment, and I will also do outreach teaching to help those who are more isolated in the camp. I will be able to assess the needs of the refugees whilst I'm working in the camp and hopefully develop a long-term teaching programme that could be adapted for camps elsewhere. There may be potential to start a new charity to develop such a programme, but I guess I'll just have to see how things go!
Well thank you so much for taking the time to read this! And thanks in advance for any support you are able to give! If you have difficulty supporting monetarily, it would also be great if you could show your support by providing teaching materials, sources or tips and tricks of the trade. As a teacher, it's always important to keep learning, so as to help your students as best you can!
Feel free to contact me on the email below if you have any questions!
Sincere thanks for your time and support!
Best wishes, love, peace and warm hugs to all!
