Update: Anna has asked for us to share a post-surgery pictures to provide the full context
Our Phillipino helper, Gladys (known to friends as Anna) has been working as a foreign domestic worker in Singapore for more than 10 years. In the 4 years that she has been with us, we have known her to be a tremendously hardworking, kind and warm spirit.
Recently, Anna experienced unbearable pain in her abdomen and had to be rushed to the Singapore General Hospital, where she was shortly admitted to the intensive care unit. Doctors there diagnosed an extreme case of Acute Abdominal Syndrome, caused in part by an advanced form of Pancreatitis. She has had to undergo multiple invasive surgeries to relieve life-threatening abdominal pressure, procedures without which she would not have survived.
Our priority continues to be Anna’s health and to that end we have put in significant amounts of our own resources towards the care she needs. We hope Anna is able to be discharged soon and begin the road to recovery. However, it is certain that Anna will not be able to work for a long period of time once she is out of the hospital.
As of today (19th May), her medical costs are in excess of S$55,000 and counting. We are hoping to raise funds for her continued medical needs, that will also go to supporting her family (a young son and her parents) back home in the Philippines.
