Campaign Story
My sister Ana, 31 is a devoted housewife and a loving mother. For her, family is the most important.
Just last June 25 when she felt pain on her jaw. We noticed her swollen lymph nodes the next day so she and her husband went to Manila East Medical Center for an OPD check-up. She was advised to take antibiotics to ease the swell but that didn't help. She went back after three days as follow up and the doctor prescribed a higher dose of antibiotics prohibiting her to breastfeed.
The swell became worse despite the medication. It spread all around her neck up to the back of her head. She can't eat properly nor drink water and experienced difficulty in breathing. She slept sitting as it pains to lay down. That's when we decided to rush her to the emergency room on July 3. She had series of laboratory tests (CBC, blood culture, XRAY and biopsy) during her 1 week of admission to pinpoint the cause of the swell. Her tests revealed an elevated white blood cells count that went up to 300,000 (normal is around 4,000-10,000/ml). They suggested to have her immediately transferred to The Medical City and referred to a Hematologist in the hospital as they are suspecting it to be Leukemia.
We drove her to TMC on the night of July 9 along with her 2-yr-old daughter, Venelope, as it’s the only chance to see her mom after a week in the hospital. As painful as it is to bid goodbye again, my niece seems to understand that her mom is in a very serious situation. For her, she will be able to see and play with her again the next day. Little did we expect that it will be a huge turnaround of events.
My sister was diagnosed with Hyperleukocytosis secondary to Acute Myelogenous Leukemia with Multiple Electrolyte imbalance. Still with high wbc count, she was moved to the intensive care unit (ICU) the next day to receive her chemo treatment as the doctors feared her heart might suddenly stop. But my sister is truly a warrior. In her three days in the ICU, she was able to surpass that storm and was transferred to a regular room to receive her continuing cycle of chemotherapy.
The doctors told us that she might need to stay for at least a month in the hospital for further tests and treatment. The storms of her illness are not over yet but we are confident that nothing is impossible with God’s grace and mercy. In my heart, my twin sister is a fighter whose bravery bests greater heights and will soon be home to be with her daughter again.
