Help Sümeyye

Update posted by Rafael Hoppichler On Jan 25, 2017

Dear friends,

We continue having a very positive feedback from people visiting our website; we have registered so far 2.830 visits. In terms of donations, we have currently a balance of 12.840 EUR collected, which unfortunately is not a big increase since last posting. Nevertheless, we have some excellent news and hope to give our campaign a new boost in the coming weeks.

We are glad to announce that we have received from Fundació FC Barcelona a football shirt signed by star Leo Messi that will be auctioned to the benefit of Sümeyye (see picture in gallery). At this point, we want to take the opportunity to express our deepest gratitude to FC Barcelona’s foundation and to Leo Messi for their interest and their support to our campaign. Messi’s generosity and his involvement in children-related projects is well known and certainly makes him an extraordinary person on top of being probably the best player in football history. A very special thank you deserves Pilar Guinovart from FC Barcelona foundation’s Infancy Care Programme for her quick and friendly response to our request for help and for the great job she and her colleagues do every day and the work the foundation develops. Although we cannot estimate the value the shirt can reach, we will soon inform you about the auction details in case you have interest to bid or just want to follow up.

Sümeyye continues showing a good progress. The physiotherapy treatment at Nesem Fizik ve Rehabilitasyon Merkezi is ongoing according to schedule, already being paid to 50% by the Turkish public health system. Also, an anonymous family has recently offered to cover the cost of the next 2 months of the psychological treatment Sümeyye is receiving at Ribem Risky Baby Development Center once per week. She is still getting her regular medication including the Cortexin injections. Next check planned with Dr.Burak Tatlı will be end of March. Sümeyye is successfully taking semi-solid alimentation 3 times per day; a new swallow test will be performed in the course of February to evaluate if the feeding tube can be removed. For the moment, the tube she had inserted into the gall bladder has been removed, which is another good sign. The doctors seem to be very satisfied with Sümeyye’s development and expect the progress to continue being positive.

We will get back to you soon with new information.

Thanks and all the best,

Rafa & Team

P.S.: On January 12, 2017 we transferred another 1.700 EUR to Murat’s account, which included the 1.360 EUR donated by band Mild Blood. I missed to post it at that moment, but you can now find the bank receipt of the transfer in the picture gallery.

Dear all,

Let me first of all wish you and your families a great 2017.

I must say that we have had an excellent start of the year. Following the generous gesture of band Mild Blood donating all benefits of their charity concert, company Graham Packaging Europe has contributed with the incredible amount of 5.000 € donated in support of Sümeyye. Graham Packaging has directly transferred its donation to Murat, Sümeyye’s father. I would like to take the opportunity to publicly thank Rafael Fernández and Sarah Cohade at Graham Packaging for their sensitivity and for making this possible.

Our campaign site continues getting many visits (over 2.600 so far). Thanks to everyone for showing interest for this cause and helping us share it with other people.

All the best,

Rafa & Team

Hi everyone,

it’s Gonzalo this time.

I'm Rafael Hoppichler’s son and drummer for a band called Mild Blood.

As you might have read in a previous update, last Thursday, December 29th, we hosted a charity concert for Sümeyye at Madrid’s Moby Dick Club with support coming from our pals The Sharrocks.

In spite of many friends being out of town because of the Christmas holidays, the event ended up being a huge success as we managed to get a crowd of 200+ people coming to the gig (almost the club’s full capacity), and we had lots of fun!

It was a real pleasure for us to be able to help Sümeyye and her family in our very own way.

The band started out as a fun hobby (actually, it still is) and for us, the best possible reward is already to play in front of such a crowd.

Therefore we decided to donate the complete amount of money earned out of ticket sales, which finally resulted in 1.360 EUR net (after paying for the club and the sound equipment rental).

We knew we had to do something to help Sümeyye from the very moment Rafa told us about her devastating story, and thought the best and most effective thing to do would be to have a good time for an even better cause.

For those who couldn’t make it, here's a nice video of the live performance of Mild Blood’s “The Roman” from Thursday’s charity concert:

All the best for you, Sümeyye, from the five of us at Mild Blood.

Dear friends & followers,

If you are looking into our campaign page from time to time, you will have seen that we have passed the 6.000 EUR bar, having collected so far 6.355 EUR between on-line and off-line donations. The number of visitors to the site has almost reached 2.300! Another 1.800 EUR have been transferred to Murat yesterday; the bank transfer receipt is available in the picture gallery. We continue progressing little by little, which is the important thing.

Tonight is the big event, we will have the concert of Mild Blood + The Sharrocks in Madrid (see details in previous update). If you don’t have yet a ticket, you can still get it this evening directly at Moby Dick Club. I am sure the guys will enjoy a great audience and we will all have a lot of fun.

Regarding Sümeyye, Murat has finally obtained this month the official disability report confirming Sümeyye’s degree of disability (80%). This document will now entitle her family to obtain a governmental monthly subsidy of 950 TL (approx. 260 EUR), starting hopefully in January (not yet confirmed). The Turkish public health system has also started paying for diapers, syringes etc. and some of the required medicines, and will also be covering 8 hours of physiotherapy per month at the Neşem Rehabilitasyon Merkezi rehab institute. Sümeyye will however require an additional 8 hours, due to the severity of her condition. Once all this is in place in Jan/Feb, the medical expenses will be reduced to approx. 490 EUR/month (1.800 TL), which is a significantly lower amount than in the past.

Some further good news on the medical side is that Sümeyye is improving properly in taking semi-solid food. If this development continues, it might be possible to remove the nasogastric feeding tube as soon as February. Sümeyye was frequently suffering convulsions, which are now being successfully treated with Clobazam. Dr.Burak Tatlı has confirmed a positive progress during last revision of Sümeyye, having prescribed also regular injections of Cortexin to improve brain energy metabolism and support the recovery of cerebral functions. This treatment is not covered by the public system. Sümeyye has started to make some noises from her mouth and is reacting to sound and voices.

The Solidarity Association for the Physical Disabled (Bedensel Engellilerle Dayanışma Derneği) in Cevizly/Istambul will fund a special infant electric wheelchair for Sümeyye, which will be of great help and allow her parents to easily move Sümeyye around and bring her regularly outside. This association will also donate the special seating/balance device we mentioned in some previous report, which should help Sümeyye to exercise and strengthen her leg muscles and get prepared to later stand straight and hopefully walk.

We continue hoping on Sümeyye’s full recovery and wish that with your financial solidarity, we can continue supporting this great family in the process, relieving them from some of the pressure they have.

Murat is still looking for a job in Istanbul area. His background and experience is in Accounting. If you know of anything that could be potentially suitable for him, even if not in Finance/Accounting, let me know and I will be glad of providing contact details, a CV and references.

And last but not least, let me wish you all a great New Year's Eve and all the best for 2017!

Thank you again for all of your help!

Dear friends & followers,

Here is a brief update to inform you about the progress of the campaign. As per today, we have collected 4.945 € and have made a new bank transfer to Sümeyye’s family of 2.100 € this week. You can find a copy of the bank transfer order in the picture gallery. So far, we have transferred 4.300 € in total. For a better understanding and clarity, GoGetFunding requires a 7 day quarantine of the donated amounts before these can be withdrawn. This is the reason for the gap between the total collected and transferred amounts. We have so far received 1.651 visits to our website, which at the end of the day are more potential donors. This is very encouraging.

Regarding the status of Sümeyye, she recently had a routinary revision, which again confirmed the slow but positive progress, although for the moment not much more can be anticipated in terms of the recovery. Sümeyye is currently suffering an infection caused by an hospital germ, which she caught during one of her visits to the hospital. This means that for the moment she must stay home and in consequence the physiotherapy has to continue with house visits from the therapist rather than Sümeyye being taken to the clinic.

But there are also some very good news. Last Tuesday Dec. 6, the Turkish health system has confirmed Sümeyye's entitlement for publicly paid therapy starting January 2017. This will reduce the costs her family is currently bearing. As soon as we know what treatments will be exactly covered and have an updated budget of what the private expenses will be as of January, we will provide the details.

We are also trying to help Murat to find a new job through some contacts we have in Turkey. If you know of any opportunity, please, get in contact with us.

Finally, a reminder of upcoming charity concert in support of our campaign next December 29 at 9:00 p.m. at Moby Dick Club (Avda. del Brasil 5, 28020 Madrid. www.mobydickclub.com), featuring Madrilenian bands Mild Blood and The Sharrocks. Tickets already available online for just 8 € at entradium.com/entradas/mild-blood-moby-dick-club. You can also purchase "Row 0" tickets if you want to contribute but cannot come to the concert.

Thanks and all the best,

Rafa & Team

Dear all,

you will have seen that we have already collected 3.200 € between on-line and off-line donations, thanks to the support of all of you promoting this project amongst your contacts and the generosity of 40 donors.

We have so far received 1.040 visits to our campaign “Help Sümeyye”. This means that we still have a big potential of increasing the donated amount, if we simply can reach the sensibility of a fraction of those many visitors and get their contribution, as small as it might be.

Yesterday, we have made a first bank transfer of 2,200 € to Murat Kucuras, Sümeyye’s father. In the picture gallery you can find a copy of the transfer order. It will still take some days until we can withdraw the remaining amount from GoGetFunding, but this is how it works. A next transfer will follow then.

Further to this brief update on the financial side of the campaign, let me transmit to you the latest information Murat has provided us on Sümeyye’s medical condition.

Sümeyye has been recently examined by Prof. Dr. Burak Tatlı, a renowned specialist at Istanbul’s Neurologic Pediatric Hospital. Prof. Tatlı had already visit Sümeyye right after the transplantation and he has been very positive about her development since April. However, he has also been very clear in terms of the tough and long recovery process, which can take several years. The next one to one-and-a-half years will be critical and require intensive physiotherapy and exercise programs.

Sümeyye suffers also a cortical blindness as a consequence of the stroke. This is an almost complete visual blindness, although some primitive vision remains through subcortical structures, which enable her to see great contrasts, lights and movements. There is a chance that she recovers sight as the blood vessels of the cortex develop again, but this process can take as much as two years. The ophthalmologist has indicated that exercising the eye contact will be a key factor for the recovery.

Regarding the feeding, Sümeyye has made some progress and is swallowing some liquid food, but she is still not ready for the nasogastric tube to be removed. The doctor has recommended starting giving her some semi-solid food from time to time, so that she continues learning to swallow.

To help Sümeyye sit upright and not be lying flat all time, the physiotherapist has recommended to get a special seating/balance device. This structure will also be an effective add to help her exercising and strengthening her leg muscles and get her ready to progressively stand straight and later walk. We hopefully will be able to fund this too.

You will find in the picture gallery a drawing Nisa, Sümeyye’s sister, has painted to say ‘thank you’ for all donations.

I will keep on informing you of any new actions and the progress we make.

Thank you again for following us and for your continued support.

Dear donors, followers, friends, interesees, people helping us to spread our request for support or anyone who simply has devoted a minute of his time to listen to us.

With your selfless contribution we have managed to exceed 2000 euros collected in these 8 days since we launched the fundraising campaign. We will proceed to make a first bank transfer to Sümeyye's family in the coming hours. This money will cover Sümeyye's medical expenses for almost two months!

Thanks again to all of you for your generosity and for the encouraging messages received. And very specially to all students who have contributed so far; I do appreciate what every euro means to your usually tight pockets. You are simply great!

We will continue keeping you posted.

All the best,

Rafa & Team
