Help Sümeyye

SÜMEYYE is only two and a half years old and lives with her parents Murat and Hacer and her seven year old sister Nisa in Istanbul’s Kartal neighborhood in Turkey.

Last April, she was detected a severe hepatic pathology and Sümeyye had to receive an urgent liver transplantation at the University Hospital of Istanbul; her uncle Yasin was the donor.

Although the transplantation itself was successful, during the 17 hour long surgery, Sümeyye suffered a brain edema followed by a brain stroke. As a consequence, this lovely girl can no longer see, walk, eat or speak. She is almost totally handicapped and lies in bed, requires nasogastric enteral feeding and has a tracheostomy to allow her breathing. Her condition is not stable and complications are requiring that she stays in hospital frequently.

Sümeyye receives now regular treatment at home from a neurologist, a physiotherapist and a speech therapist, which are starting to see little signs of improvement, however, all these costs are not covered by the Turkish healthcare system and are far beyond the family’s possibilities. In total, her medical expenses amount to 1.169 € per month (3.983 TL).

Sümmeye’s family monthly income is less than half of the aforementioned costs. And this household of four still needs to also pay for housing, food and cover its other minimum needs.

Currently, a group of relatives and friends as well as some colleagues from work contribute to the precarious economy of the family and help as they can to fund these expenses.

Mid of October, Murat was informed that his employment contract was being terminated following the shutdown of the company for which he works as an accountant. Murat is not only not entitled to receive unemployment money, but his working colleagues will neither be able to continue helping him, as they are also losing their jobs due to the closing of the business. This leaves this family facing an uncertain future and puts Sümeyye’s possibilities of recovery at serious risk.

I am clear that we all live surrounded by dramatic situations, many even more critical than this one, but I believe that each of us needs to be confronted with one case in particular in order to be shaken, react and realize that it is in our hands to do something about it; at least in one case.

Please, help us give Sümeyye one opportunity!

SÜMEYYE tiene solo dos años y medio y vive con sus padres Murat y Hacer y su hermana Nisa de 7 años en el barrio de Kartal en Estambul, Turquía.

El pasado mes de abril le detectaron una grave patología hepática y Sümeyye tuvo que someterse a un trasplante urgente de hígado en el Hospital Universitario de Estambul; su tío Yasin fue el donante.

Aunque el trasplante en si fue un éxito, durante la intervención quirúrgica de 17 horas, Sümeyye sufrió un edema y un infarto cerebrales. Como consecuencia de este último, la pequeña ya no puede ver, andar, comer ni hablar. Sufre una invalidez casi total y está en cama con alimentación enteral por sonda nasogástrica y con una cánula traqueal para respirar. Su estado no es estable y sufre complicaciones que hacen que tenga que volver a ser ingresada con frecuencia.

En este momento, a Sümeyye la están tratando en su casa un neurólogo, un fisioterapeuta y un logopeda, quienes empiezan a apreciar pequeños signos de mejoría, pero estos costes no los cubre la sanidad pública turca y escapan a lo que su familia puede asumir. En total, los gastos médicos de Sümeyye ascienden a 1.169 € mensuales (3.983 TL).

Los ingresos mensuales de la familia de Sümeyye son de menos de la mitad de los gastos médicos mencionados. Y este hogar de cuatro miembros aún tiene que pagar vivienda, alimentación y cubrir otras necesidades mínimas.

Actualmente, un grupo de familiares y amigos, así como algunos compañeros de trabajo, contribuyen con lo que pueden a la precaria economía familiar para ayudar a sufragar los gastos médicos.

Hace solo dos semanas, la empresa en la que trabaja Murat como contable le ha comunicado su despido por cierre. Murat no solo no tendrá derecho a subsidio de desempleo, sino que sus compañeros de trabajo tampoco le podrán seguir ayudando, ya que también pierden su empleo con el cierre de la empresa. Esta situación deja a la familia ante un futuro incierto y pone en serio riesgo las posibilidades de recuperación de Sümeyye.

Soy consciente de que todos vivimos rodeados de situaciones dramáticas –muy probablemente incluso más que esta-, pero creo que cada uno de nosotros tiene que conocer de cerca un caso en concreto que nos sacuda, y nos haga reaccionar y darnos cuenta de lo fácil que es hacer algo; al menos en un caso.

Sümeyye sadece iki buçuk yaşında ve babası Murat annesi Hacer ve yedi yaşındaki kız kardeşi Nisa ile beraber Kartal Istanbul'da yaşıyor.

Geçen Nisan ayında Sümeyye akut karaciğer yetmezliği sebebi ile kaldırıldığı İstanbul Üniversitesi Hastanesinde, dayısı Yasin'den alınan parça ile karaciğer nakli ameliyatı geçirdi.

Nakil ameliyatı başarılı geçse de, 17 saatlik ameliyat sonrası beyin ödemi oluştu ve ne yazık ki beyin enfarktüsü geçirdi. Bu sebeple bu tatlı kızımız ne yazık ki yürüyemiyor, yemek yiyemiyor, ne de konuşabiliyor. Yatağa bağlı bir durumda yaşama tutunmaya çalışıyor. Nazogastrik enteral sonda ile besleniyor (burun içinden mideye indirilen tüp) ve yutkunması olmadığından trakeostomi ile yardımcı olunuyor. Durumu sabit değil ve sürekli çıkan yeni sağlık sorunları yüzünden bazı zamanlar tekrardan hastanede yatmak zorunda kalıyor.

Sümeyye şu anda her ay nöroloji uzmanına, fizyoterapiste ve konuşma ve psikolojik gelişimi için bir psikiyatri uzmanından tedavi görüyor. Küçük de olsa ilerleme kaydediyor. Fakat ne yazık ki devlet bu tedavileri karşılamıyor ve ailenin gelirinden kat kat daha fazla olan tüm bu sağlık masrafları tedavilerin devamını tehlikeye atıyor. Hey ay 3.983 Lira olan bu masraflar ne yazık ki aileyi ümitsizliğe sürüklüyor

Sümeyye'nin ailesinin geliri bu masrafların yarısını ancak karşılıyor ve bu aileyi çok zor durumda bırakıyor.

Şu sıralar akrabalar, tanıdıklar ve iş arkadaşları tarafından verilen bağışlarla bu tedaviler sürdürülüyor.

Ne yazık ki iki hafta önce Murat'ın muhasebe elemanı olarak çalıştığı şirket Türkiye operasyonlarını kapatacaklarını bildirdi ve bu sebeple Murat Aralık ayından itibaren işsiz kalacak. Ne yazık ki mali destek veren iş arkadaşları da aynı kaderi paylaştıklarından yardımlarını devam ettirmeleri çok zor olacak. Bu durum Sümeyye'nin tedavisini ve ailesinin geleceğini belirsizliğe sokuyor, ve şu anda küçük adımlarla sağlığına kavuşmaya çalışan Sümeyye'nin tedavisini tehlikeye atıyor.

Eminim ki hepimizin çevresinde bu tip üzüntüler sıkıntılar hep oluyordur, belki daha bile kötüleri vardır, ama inanıyorum ki insanın elindekilerinin değerini bilmesi için bu tip bir hikaye ile karşı karşıya kalması gerekiyor ve benim hikayem de Sümeyye'nin hayatı. Bazı hikayeleri başarıya mutluluğa taşımak bizim ellerimizde!!
