Many of you who know me well might have heard me talk about Stephen- my good friend who helped make my research in Liberia a success. As my translator, guide, advisor and dear friend, I could not have successfully finished my study without Stephen! He is one of the brightest people I have met- a renaissance man with a bright future who is skilled in agriculture, film, karate, and criminal justice. Stephen and his 8-year old daughter are facing the ongoing threat of ebola in Liberia, which has infected over 5000 people in West Africa, and hit Liberia the hardest. The crisis is very real for my friends in Liberia, without the proper infrastructure and health resources to control an outbreak of this magnitude. It is estimated to infect 90,000 people by the end of the year. For Liberia, a country of over a million people, this in 1 in ten. To contribute in the small way that I can, I have decided to help Stephen and his daughter leave Liberia, by fundraising for their tickets to Ghana. For only $500 for plane tickets, if I can contribute something to helping these two people I care about leave this dangerous situation, then I have to try- but I need your help! I would donate all of the money myself, if I weren't currently unemployed and financially strapped. I plan to donate $100. We only need around $400 more, If you can help contribute in any small way (even $5 helps!), this would mean a lot to me and my friend Stephen! You may be thinking, with so many people in trouble, why try to help just one person? It's true that Liberia needs a global effort, broader institutional change. But I am just one person, trying to help a friend. And just think, if everyone of us helps just one person, think how much change we could create!
