The aim of this campaign is to enable parents or guardians to read to young children at home and for all parties involved to experience the miraculous power of reading aloud. Enjoying books and reading stories from a very early age is crucial in the development of children.
South Africa’s reading crisis has been an ongoing issue and several strategies have been proposed to improve literacy in South Africa. Some of these include promoting a culture of reading; encouraging parents to read to their children (only 5% of parents in SA read to their children); making books accessible in schools; and improving initial teacher education.
Kylemore is a previously disadvantaged rural community outside Stellenbosch in South Africa. Although a well-established community with deep historical roots, it is still economically vulnerable: 60% of adults are unemployed, and the village is socially deprived of community facilities. There is no public library. The primary school does not even have a library. Exposing children to rich language, books and stories before they can read primes them to learn.
We would love to donate Big (Story) Books to the grade R learners (at their homes) at PC Petersen Primary in Kylemore. Furthermore we hope to equip the grade R teachers with resource kits linked to these Big Books & follow up sessions with our in-house literacy consultant. Teachers are currently doing their best to support parents, by delivering “activities” to each of their learners at home. The activities would be more learner centred and appropriate if linked to a story. We’d love to get our beautiful Big Books (A3 size) into homes where these lovely stories can be enjoyed and read aloud to young children to boost their early learning experience! The Big Books have “tweets” which guide parents/teachers to develop the thinking skills during reading and thus encouraging reading with understanding even in these very young emergent readers. Kylemore is a small community and it will be possible to deliver the reading resources door to door.
With the focus now on home-schooling, parents need all the guidance and support they can get for learners to develop the necessary and crucial foundational skills.
As a publisher we would love to support and partake in such a wonderful initiative and that is why we cut the prices of our Big Books by 70%.
We now need partners to further support these efforts! Please help us to make this happen within the next two weeks. The impact on the young learners and the community will be immeasurable! Thank you in advance.
