Campaign Story
When I was responsible for UNICEF's programmes in a country, I used to mobilize funds for the education and health of children. This time I am aiming at helping the plumber in Popenguine in Senegal, Souleymane Thiaw, who just lost his house. One night Souleymane and his family were woken up by a terribly loud noise, which came from the roof of the house. Had he not immediately taken his family, wife and three children, out of the house and into the yard, it is very likely that somebody would have been killed. The roof collapsed due to poor construction, aggravated by a weak foundation. The entire house has to be rebuilt. In the meantime, Souleymane and his family sleeps in a small workshop. His wife prepares the food in the open. She is worried how she will be cooking once the rainy season begins, which is normally in September. His children have no place to do their homework. Souleymane and his wife are heartbroken. He states: I am broke. In spite of this he has already begun with friends and neighbours to prepare new bricks to rebuild the walls. Souleymane is always ready to help the villagers, when they have a problem with either toilet or water. He never asks for more than the costs of materials and his time. Although I am in the habit always to bargain for services in Senegal, I never bargain with Souleymane. I know that he is a very honest person. I would be very happy if I through this site could help Souleymane an his family. We will be sharing photos with anybody who contributes to this cause. Thank you in advance.
