Help some families in need a peaceful month

“Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it” - Proverbs 22:6

We all know that it’s not easy to be a mother. Here we have some children coming from families that just suffered from main family income provider's death, heavy illness, emergencies and any other kinds of accidents that cause them unable to work in Taiwan.

What is 1919 Children Companion Program?

1919 Children Companion Program is aimed at helping underprivileged children break the vicious circle of family problems or conditions by nurturing them. We want to lead them and direct them to the correct path and walk with them. In order to do that, we provide tutorial classes, extracurricular activities, life education and family care. We also provide them with nutritious snacks and even dinner. We spend time with the children whilst their family cannot due to various reasons.

We strongly believe that the children should not be limited or burdened by their background. They should all have fair opportunities and access to social care and companionship. We want to help those, especially those who are often neglected, coming from low income family and cannot afford anything extra, whose single parent that can barely spend time with them because of work, who are solely looked after by the grands because their parents have separated, children with disability, and whose parent(s) is a foreigner...or those who come from a problematic family. All of them deserve equal learning opportunities, care and enough attention.

Since the program launched in 2004, we have subsidize a total number of 36,000 children. In September 2018 alone, we had 277 classes, i.e. 3112 children that received tutorial lessons, life education, talent lessons and family care; in addition, there were 77 multi-talent classes.

Testimonials:

May (anonym) joined the program when she was in grade 1. Her parents are divorced and her father goes to jail often because of frequent theft. She is taken care of mainly by her grandmother. She used to shoplift but was caught many times. Our program teacher once asked her if she has stolen other student’s mobile phone. May denied it. Then the teacher continued, “May, if you have really taken the mobile phone, I’d really like to face the problem with you. In the class, I will protect you. But in the outside world, you might be sent to the police” May then admitted she did it. The teacher said to her, “Next time, when you see something that you really want, leave that place. Or pray to God and ask him to help you”. The teacher tried to help her build May’s confidence by challenging her and she said, “Do you want to ride bicycle around Taiwan with your classmates this summer?” May said yes. The teacher said, “Alright. Then do these things: finish your homework on time and don’t shoplift or lie. If you pass, then you may join the trip”. In order to achieve this little dream, May made her promises. After the bike trip, she never steals anything again.

Some of our underprivileged students’ mother is the main caretaker and even as well as the breadwinner in the family. Every mother holds the same hope for their child. They want their child to grow up healthily and happily. These mothers might not need any gift or medal. They only hope for the best for their child. And for them, it’s the best gift.

We have gathered together members from these families, and also social volenteers who take care of them into two classical concerts at the end of April in Taiwan. We invite our other audience on the spot to donate as well. Mother’s Day is around the corner. Let us give these mothers peace of mind, seeing their own children thrive is the best thing ever.
