Campaign Story
From Skye’s owner Beverley: I found Skye in a dog park in Westminster, CO in October of 2014. She appeared to have been left there overnight, scarred, freezing and hungry. She ran right to me when I walked in the gate with my son’s dog, wagging her tail and just wanting to be held. She climbed up in my lap and I wrapped my coat around her and held her while making calls, trying to find out if anyone had reported her missing. She was in perfect condition, clean as a pin, trimmed nails, and just the most loving dog ever. After a month, no one had claimed her so when we took her back with us to Santa Fe NM and had her spayed and vetted. They estimated her to be 2 to 3 years old and she had been bred several times.
I took her to a trainer at the VA in Albuquerque and she was trained to be my PTSD dog. She has been with me every day ever since. I am a 100% disabled Marine Corps Veteran and I live on a pension and my social security. When my husband John was diagnosed with cancer June of 2017, he had to go into hospice for a month to have radiation and some chemo. Skye went with him and would lie on the bed with him every day, all day long. John passed away that August with Skye at his side. Now that he’s gone, she’s the only “human” that is close to me and I don’t know what I would do without her. She’s the most attentive, loving, empathetic, intelligent dog I have ever had. I have a lot of anxiety due to my PTSD and could turn into a hermit if I didn’t have her to go with me and go on walks with me. She makes live livable after losing so much. She is my family.
In mid-March I was at the vet with Skye and they noticed a mass on one of her rear legs. They aspirated the growth and said it might be a mast cell tumor. We were referred to Upstate Veterinary Specialists and given an estimate of $2,000 to $2,500 for the referral visit and surgery needed to remove the growth. I do not have the funds because the small amount of savings that I had went to repairing my home that was flooded last year. I just want my girl to be healthy and happy for as long as possible. She is what keeps me going and I will always be there for her as well.
Thank you for listening to my story and for donating to help my girl. I will be forever grateful.
