Shravan Krishnan helps in running an NGO called The Besant Memorial Animal Dispensary. It was started by the Theosophical Society on the 15th of July 2000. It is a rescue shelter for injured and abandoned animals.

Shravan Krishnan is a 29-year-old young man who is an animal lover since his childhood, he has been rescuing injured dogs, cats, horses and birds for years.

He is running the shelter home full-time for the last 3 years, Shravan has saved more than 10,000 animals along with his team of caretakers and veterinarians. Today, the center houses more than 200+ injured and abandoned animals.

One of Shravan’s first rescued animals was a three-legged pony named Charlie. For the past five years, he has been taking care of Charlie at his shelter, feeding him thrice a day and giving him medicines regularly. Even though Charlie can’t walk, he lives a healthy life at the shelter.

"Every animal at Besant Memorial Animal Dispensary has been rescued from a difficult past and has a story to tell. I remember the names and stories of each and every animal. Charlie recognizes my voice and responds every time I call out to him,” says Shravan.

The most common cases at the shelter are fractures of dogs from being run over by cars and maggot wounds which could take months to treat. "The emergency number for rescue is my personal number. I can’t keep my phone on silent even for a second or miss a call. Every second counts as it could be a life or death matter for an animal." Shravan receives around 15 to 20 rescue calls every day.

Furthermore, the shelter takes up abandoned dogs and helps rehabilitate them. It also has an active outpatient unit for people who can't afford private clinics for their animals.

The monthly cost of running the shelter

"At BMAD, our dream is to provide services on par to a private clinic to our stray animals. We have three full-time veterinarians who work every day from 9 to 5 and also attend to emergencies. They perform around 80 surgeries every month,” tells Shravan.

They also have to pay their caretakers, take care of the running cost of the ambulance, getting medicines, and most importantly, food for close to 200 animals three times a day. “It costs around Rs 5 to 6 lakh every month. Apart from this, we plan on investing in equipment like X-ray and Ultrasound machines which could be life-saving for the animals," says Shravan.

"We are completely transparent about our donations and where they are put to use. Our donors derive a lot of happiness seeing the difference they are making in an animal’s life. Your donation would go a long way in saving a stray animal’s life," he adds.

Shravan has done a wonderful job so far, but he needs your support to continue doing his humanitarian work. Please come forward and donate generously to his campaign. Your contribution can save the lives of innocent animals. Donate now to make a difference!
