Hi, my name is Shanice Stanislaus and for the past three years I’ve been running dance and Zumba pilot programs in Battamabang, Cambodia. The intention for this project was simple: I have always believed that an arts education is necessary for communities to thrive and I wanted to work with the youths to nurture a community of socially responsible thinkers, artists and creators. I wanted to teach and impart the skills of creation through the medium of fitness and dance in hope that these skills will transcend beyond the arts and be utilised in critical thinking and problem solving for issues in the community. The past 3 years spent growing my programming with the community has been the most fulfilling to say the least. In 2017, my program got discovered by Move to Empower, a non-profit organization recognised by the United Nations and also sponsored by Zumba Home Office. It was an honour to be invited to join their team and I have come on board to expand the scale of the programming in Cambodia.

This year, I’m proud to announce that my team and I have been invited to join the Move to Empower team in their mission to the second largest slum in the world, the Kibera slum, in Nairobi, Kenya. We are really looking forward to the opportunity to join the team to establish dance, fitness and empowerment programs in Kibera, with the hope to nurture a community of leaders and creators in this arena. As the representative of the Singapore team, I personally wish to both give my skills and expertise to this program and also bring some extra funds to financially assist the development and sustainability of these programs. Hence, we will be raising funds for this trip for the following reasons:

  • Sponsorship for the educational programs being offered for the community in Kibera, including Zumba Fitness and Zumba Kids/Zumba Kids Jr. and train-the-trainer programs to develop instructors and choreographers (B1 Training);
  • Funds to sustain these programs as well as for the building of new infrastructure and renovation of current infrastructure so that the community will have places to continue to pursue their education initiatives.

Our goal is to raise USD 8,000 (if possible) and I will be personally delivering the funds to the community in Africa on behalf of the Singapore team. Most importantly, as my team and I work with Move to Empower, my personal goal is to learn from the community-based practitioners there in hope to scale up my own current programming in Battambang, Cambodia and to hopefully reach other communities in Southeast Asia.

We appreciate any amount that can be donated as every dollar truly counts! We thank you for your support and we look forward to keeping all donors updated on the trip and the sustainability plans in our continued programming for Kenya.
