We need help rescuing animals affected by the massive flooding in the Ubon area of Thailand.

Ubon has seen record flooding this year which has displaced many of the people living near the Mun river. It has also affected the lives of the areas dog and cat populations. As a result, there are many injured or dying animals roaming the streets and local common spaces. Some of them are pets that were abandoned or lost during the flooding, some were already wild but have been forced out of their usual habitats and into more congested areas which have led to them being hit by vehicles and getting into fights with each other. On September 17th we helped rescue two such animals, the dogs Rooster and Lucky.

Rooster was our main goal that day as he had a completely destroyed left eye, likely from a fight, and if left untreated it would have surely killed him with infection. As a wild dog he was already skittish around humans, but with the pain of the eye driving him he wouldn’t let us get within 50 feet to use our blow gun to tranquilize him. Eventually we were able to corner him on a natural pier on the river and capture him with our net. He was not happy but he should live. They let me name him so I picked my favorite one-eyed sour-puss, Rooster Cogburn, as his namesake.

Lucky was a much easier catch but only because we, and he, were fortunate that he happened to be walking right next to the road we were using to bring Rooster back. He was curious and I was quick, so we snagged him with much less effort, a relief to us all. His teeth are almost completely missing due to rot so he was also ‘lucky’ we got him when we did as he would have slowly starved to death in the now highly competitive environment he inhabited.

The shelter I am working with is now at 300% capacity with both dogs and cats. As such, it needs as much help as it can get if it is to continue its mission of saving animals who have no one else. As of today they are around 400,000 baht(~$15,000) in the red with the purchasing of food, medicine, fuel, labor, and the planning of minor construction projects like building a wall to better enclose their ‘overflow lot’. I don’t expect to raise all of those funds in my network, so I am setting a more modest goal of $500.

I am going to continue to volunteer my time for at least another week if not two, so that should cut down on some labor costs but they still need more. So, I’m asking you, my friends and family (and anyone they share this with), to please donate whatever money you can to help us help these animals. I will be documenting every excursion we take and posting the results online so that all those who donate will be able to keep abreast of our successes. I am also going to make a video of the day I hand over the funds raised here that I will be sure to email to every single donor. Attached to that email will be a receipt showing how much we finally raised and any conversion fees that might be levied before the final hand-off. Furthermore, I have been given permission to sell ‘naming rights’ to the animals we capture as an incentive to those who might wish to donate larger sums. I will send an email to each one of these donors containing pictures of the animal they named, along with a story about how we captured them and why.
