I am Mary Grace Perez Alambra, 34 years old, residing at Imus Cavite, Philippines. I am writing this letter to ask for any financial aid for my brother, Richard Perez.
My brother is an employee of Senate of the Philippines under Budget Services since February 2011. Last June 23, it was published in Manila Bulletin that two Senate employees were tested positive for COVID-19, and one of them is my brother.
Last June 14, we rushed him to the hospital because he was feeling very weak and even fainted. He was confined at Medical Center Imus (MCI), a Kaiser-accredited hospital which is his health card. After one day of confinement, he was isolated.
His swab specimen was collected last June 16, and we received the result last June 18 confirming that he has COVID-19. Later that day, we were informed by MCI that he will be transferred to Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo Memorial Hospital (GEAMH) at Trece Martires for reasons we didn’t know. It was MCI’s decision to transfer him and it was their hospital of choice. His hospital bill at MCI was Php192,421 which was shouldered by Philhealth and Kaiser.
By June 19, he was finally transferred to GEAMH. However, due to his deteriorating health which would require intensive care, we decided to transfer him to a different hospital. During this time, it is really very hard to find a hospital which could accommodate my brother due to his condition, but we were fortunate enough to be accommodated at De La Salle University Medical Center (DLSUMC) at Dasmarinas Cavite, which is also a Kaiser-accredited hospital. He was transferred to DLSUMC on June 20.
His condition worsened and now he is in the ICU and is intubated. He was already given Plasma treatment that we got from Philippine General Hospital which costed Php40,190.00.
Due to his deteriorating condition, there are still tests and procedures that are being conducted on him. He had a CT Scan last June 27 since the doctors suspected some brain complications because he was not very responsive after they stopped giving him sedatives. As per advice of his Neurologist, he has to undergo MRI and EEG as well.
As of June 28, his running bill at DLSUMC is Php726,532.84. Professional fee of doctors are not yet included in this billing. I, together with other family members, am in deep stress right now worrying about his health and recovery. With the rate of increase in our hospital bill, we have an additional aspect to worry about. We are simply regular employees earning a decent salary, and we are not ready for this kind of expense.
It is still uncertain as to when he will be discharged. Based on data and information we read, most patients stay for as long as 30 to 45 days before they are discharged. Assuming the same will happen to my brother, though we are hoping and praying for his fast recovery, we are expecting a huge medical expense by the end of his hospitalization. In this regard, we are humbly asking for any financial support you can offer us. Any amount will be greatly appreciated and will be a very big help to ease our financial burden.
My brother’s wife, Elvira Perez, is an employee of Department of Foreign Affairs, and my brother’s children are in grade school. They are all currently under home quarantine. We are not only worried about my brother but also worried about his family as they may also be infected by COVID. The family already underwent swab testing and are currently waiting for the results. We are praying that the swab test would turn out negative.
