Ron as a friend and a colleague

Ron Dangcalan is one of our good friends who inspire others to strive to become a better person and a better Filipino. Back in the university, Ron was the friend who liked to engage in both intellectual discussions and fun conversations about series like the Game of Thrones and How to Get Away with Murder. In addition to that, Ron was very active in events and worked on the Model United Nations (MUN) organization in our university (among all the other cool things he did). He was the student who doesn't back down in debate and is very much well-read in topics well beyond our field of study. Moreover, despite his humility, Ron is a proud Filipino who have high hopes for the country. His love for the country has inspired him to work for the government (in different departments) and with his last post being an Assistant Professor in UP Los Baños. All in all, I feel very honored to have worked side-by-side with a colleague as smart and inspiring as Ron.

When Ron got the disease

Ron is not the type of person who broadcasts his problems online. And so it was with such surprise for his university friends to receive a message from his mom this April. The message read as follows:

"My son, IP Ron Dangcalan of the Rotary Club Los Baños Makiling is diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease in the digestive system called Crohn's disease. His own immune system attacks his own digestive organs. A mass was found in Ron's cecum at his large intestine which doctors are worried that it might lead to more serious complications. He has lost weight from 52 to 43 kilos, suffers from anemia, spinal pain and debilitating gut pain.

We've had almost two months of expensive treatment and visits to different hospitals (St. Luke's, Makati Med, Cardinal, PGH, Healthserv, LBDH and UHS), our family is drained financially. His doctor has now advised him to be admitted to hospital and be given biologic drugs which costs around Php 27,000 each. He needs 6-10 in his first month.

All these costs on top of hospitalization fee, further tests and other medicines (steroids, supplements, etc) prevent him from being admitted right away as advised by doctors. We appeal to your prayers, kindness and generosity, any assistance financially to our will make a lot of difference.

It is with this message that our group of friends have decided to start initiatives to help our friend in this time of need. One of our initiatives is this page. We are very much in need of your help to bring Ron back to his feet and fight his disease. We know of his great potential in serving the community and it pains us to see a very cheerful and kind friend battling this disease.

We estimate that his total expenses would reach up to 3 million pesos. Our love for and belief in Ron is not daunted by the amount of this price. However, we are fully aware that we cannot raise this amount by ourselves. As such, we would like to ask for your kindness to please donate any amount, and let us help Ron fight Crohn's disease.
