Help Rohingya, Save Humanity!

The Obama administration tried to reach out to the Muslim world; a good idea after the Bush administration. Unfortunately, we now have Donald Trump, an Islamophobe, as President. Nonetheless, I believe we have a duty to help solve a desperate humanitarian crisis and also demonstrate that ours is still essentially an open and tolerant society. The Rohingya people have been in the news recently because of a few boatloads of them that were towed out to sea by the Thai Navy and left to drift...and die. In Burma, they are subject to terrible repression and they are rejected everywhere. We could offer resettlement for at least some of these people--especially those who have left by boat. As someone who worked for a number of years with Southeast Asian refugees, I feel strongly that the U.S. could do something here that would burnish its image among Muslims and at the same time would be "the right thing to do".

900,000 refugees living in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, including over 720,000 who have arrived since 25 August 2017. Living conditions were already challenging with so many new arrivals, but as the rains lash down the camp is becoming more treacherous by the day.

We're doing everything we can to help – dispatching search-and-rescue teams, training refugee volunteers on emergency preparedness and response, providing tools and material to strengthen shelters and relocating thousands of families to safer ground.
