Sandals was a stray that showed up in our backyard one night. After searching for his owner, to no avail, we decided to try to find a home for him. We had no intention of keeping him, as it would be difficult with the 3 other cats we currently had. We noticed he was not neutered, so we took him to our vet for his neuter surgery and all vaccinations. A short time later, his neuter site became badly abcessed and we had to get him emergency care. He also had a severe case of earmites that we had to eliminate and we decided to treat all 4 cats, as they are highly contagious. It was during this time of caring for him, that we fell in love with him and decided we would try our best to make it work with our other cats. Our vet bills for Sandals were approx. $1,000 in a couple of months. Once we decided to keep him, we took him for a complete checkup. The vet gave us bad news. Stomatitis. Once I researched it at home, I realized how drastic and costly the treatment is. Stomatitis is a chronic and most likely a genetic condition where the cats immune system attacks the gums and oral tissues in response to plaque. It causes severe inflammation it is extremely painful for the cat! Conservative treatments usually fail and just prolong the inevitable...full mouth extractions - pulling every tooth. That sounds very extreme, but it is actually the kindest thing you can do for a cat suffering with the pain of stomatitis. Cats function perfectly well without any teeth. They often swallow their food whole anyhow. Once the cat is free from pain, the cat lives a happy life and often owners say they become like a new cat! This is our goal for Sandals. The pain he endures daily does affect his mood and makes him irritable and sometimes he has aggressive outbursts. Because of this, he is not yet fully incorporated into our house. He still has to remain separated from our other male. Sandals is a sweet, very playful boy with lots of energy. But, this condition is not letting him live the happiest life he can because of his pain. We choose to do this surgery for him, despite not being able to afford it, because we can't let him continue to be in pain. We believe animals deserve dignity and love and that if they are suffering in any way, we have an obligation as their caretakers to give them the medical care they need and deserve. The cost of the full mouth extraction surgery and post op care is $3,300. Because we have already paid around $1,000 for him and $1,000 on one of our other cats, all since Oct. of 2014, we really need help. If you feel led to donate any amount, no matter how small, it will be greatly appreciated. We realize that it is your hard earned money and to choose to share it to help pay for Sandals surgery would mean so much. We couldn't thank you enough! If you are unable to donate, or already have made a donation, will you please share this page? Please share it on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest etc. The more shares, the more likely we will be able to raise funds. Thank you so much!!
